Celebrating Unity: Dubai Culture’s Festivities for Eid Al Etihad 2023
As the UAE marks its 54th Eid Al Etihad, the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) has curated a remarkable series of cultural experiences and public events to honor this significant occasion. Celebrated this year under the theme ‘United,’ the initiative aligns with the ongoing #ZayedAndRashid campaign, organized by Brand Dubai for the second consecutive time during the ‘National Month’ festivities.
A Celebration Spread Across the City
From November 28 to December 3, numerous cultural venues, including the Etihad Museum, Al Safa Art & Design Library, Al Shindagha Museum, Al Jalila Cultural Centre for Children, Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, and Hatta Heritage Village, will come alive with activities that reflect the UAE’s rich cultural heritage. The festival aims not only to tell the story of the Union but also to showcase local talent and celebrate the UAE’s diverse traditions.
A Musical Tribute
In recognition of the occasion, Dubai Culture has unveiled the song ‘Bu Khalid & Bu Rashid,’ composed by Sharifa Ahmed and performed by the Emirates Chorus. The lyrics, written by poet Hassan AlObaidily, pay homage to His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. This musical piece is a testament to their leadership and the accomplishments that have significantly elevated the UAE’s standing on the global stage.
Illuminating History
During the festive period, the Etihad Museum will be adorned with lights depicting the colors of the UAE flag from December 1 to 3. This visual spectacle invites community members to revisit the historic moment of the Union’s declaration. Visitors can engage with an array of interactive stations that fuse traditional Emirati values with modern artistic expression. Attractions include immersive VR experiences showcasing UAE landmarks and achievements in sectors like space exploration and renewable energy. Artistic workshops, such as clay pot decoration and planting techniques, along with traditional performances, will enrich this experience further.
Family Fun at Al Shindagha Museum
Families are encouraged to explore the Al Shindagha Museum from November 29 to December 3. With its dedicated alleyways, the museum will feature interactive classes led by experts from the Turath Centre for Traditional Handicrafts. Activities will encompass a variety of traditional crafts like burqa sewing, Al Sadu weaving, and silversmithing. The programme also includes an enchanting apothecary workshop on natural remedies, a perfume-making session focusing on traditional scents, and an Al Talli weaving class. Additionally, folk performances will highlight the beauty of heritage arts like Al Nahmah and Al A’yyala.
Engaging Artistic Expressions
On November 28 and 29, the Al Safa Art & Design Library will host an event titled ‘Dubai Font Beyond the Canvas,’ in collaboration with the Emirates Writers Union. Notable figures such as poet Sheikha Al Mutairi, artist Shamsa Al Jasmi, and calligrapher Ali Al Hammadi will engage the audience in discussions about the cultural significance of Dubai Font. A complementary exhibition will display rare pens and inkwells, enriching the artistic experience. Attendees can also enjoy live musical performances, crafts, and drawing sessions, alongside a vibrant market showcasing products inspired by Emirati heritage.
Cultural Performances Across Historic Sites
The festivities will extend to Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood and Hatta Heritage Village on December 2 and 3, offering cultural performances organized by Dubai Culture in collaboration with the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs – Dubai. Meanwhile, Al Jalila Cultural Centre for Children will kick off the celebration on November 28 with a lively programme featuring a ‘Best National Outfit’ competition, interactive falcon experiences, henna art, and various folkloric performances.
