Celebrating Achievements: Watson College Commencement 2025
On May 16, 2025, the Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science at Binghamton University hosted its Commencement ceremony, marking a significant milestone for over 450 undergraduates and nearly 400 master’s students. Surrounded by family, friends, faculty, and peers, graduates gathered at the Binghamton University Events Center to celebrate their hard-earned accomplishments.
A Day of Reflection and Celebration
The ceremony commenced with Dean Atul Kelkar welcoming attendees and reflecting on his first year at Watson College. He likened the journey of students to discovering how to navigate college life, encouraging graduates with the words, "just keep swimming." His message centered on the hard work and resilience displayed by the students, emphasizing the countless hours invested in studies, teamwork, and personal growth.
"The work you have put in, the late nights, and the friendships you’ve developed — all of this has been a testament to your resilience and commitment to excellence," he expressed. Dean Kelkar urged graduates to carry forward values such as perseverance, compassion, curiosity, and courage into their future endeavors.

Acknowledging Achievements
Binghamton University President Harvey Stenger echoed Dean Kelkar’s sentiments, celebrating the graduates’ accomplishments both in and outside the classroom. He addressed the audience of supporters, including family members who played crucial roles in the graduates’ journeys.
"We call this event Commencement not because it’s the ending of a chapter, but rather a beginning," President Stenger remarked, emphasizing the important transitions ahead. He reassured the graduates that, despite the challenges they may face, they have already proven their capability to adapt and succeed.
Insights from Leadership
Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Donald Hall praised the Class of 2025 for their work ethic and intellectual curiosity. He spoke about the transformative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on education and emphasized the importance of work-life balance.
"Define your value to prospective employers," he advised, highlighting skills such as problem-solving, collaboration, and leadership that they cultivated during their time at Binghamton. These are not merely academic achievements; they are essential tools that will serve graduates well in the ever-evolving job market.

Welcoming a Global Community
Alumni Association President Cara Treidel ’16 extended a warm welcome to the new graduates, inviting them to join a global network of nearly 160,000 Binghamton alumni in over 100 countries. She reminded them that this community will provide support as they navigate their professional journeys.
"Wherever you go, there is likely to be a Binghamton grad who can offer support, answer questions, or just chat about shared Binghamton experiences," she noted, reinforcing the network that awaits them post-graduation.
A Voice for Change
Graduate student speaker Osamah Ali Yaeesh, MS ’25, shared his journey as a graduate research associate and data scientist, emphasizing the importance of gratitude. He encouraged fellow graduates to reflect on the support systems that helped them along the way.
"The only way forward is to trust yourself, take the leap, and see where it leads," Yaeesh challenged, reminding graduates that while they may feel uncertainty, they now have the opportunity to write their own stories.

The Power of Gratitude
Undergraduate student speaker Christian Martinez ’25, a mechanical engineering major and leader in campus organizations, shared his reflections on the friendships forged during his journey. He underscored the significance of expressing gratitude to those who have supported graduates during their time at Binghamton.
"Take a moment to express your gratitude," Martinez urged, drawing attention to the connections and memories that have shaped their experiences in college.

A Noteworthy Ceremony
As the Watson College Commencement ceremony concluded, it was clear that the spirit of resilience, community, and forward-thinking would guide the Class of 2025 as they embarked on their future journeys. The graduation not only celebrated past achievements but also inspired anticipation for the paths that lay ahead.
