Rolex’s Commitment to Innovation: Insights from Recent Keynote Discussion

During a recent keynote discussion led by Wei Koh, the founder of Revolution Magazine, Rolex’s Chief Executive, Jean-Frédéric Dufour, shared valuable insights into the company’s approach to manufacturing and technology. Addressing a captivated audience, Dufour unveiled key aspects of Rolex’s substantial investments in maintaining its industrial manufacturing operations.

Investing in Advanced Technology

Every year, Rolex allocates approximately CHF 100 million to upgrade, repair, and replace its advanced machinery. This significant annual investment supports the production of around 1 million watches, showcasing the brand’s dedication to operational excellence and innovation. Dufour emphasized that these upgrades are not merely for show; they are critical for ensuring the precision and quality of Rolex watches.

“It’s not just because we find it fun. It’s because we want to always have the latest generation to be able to produce the best components we can in terms of precision and quality,” he stated.

The Role of Artificial Intelligence

“AI can also help you for the final quality test. Because you can replace the human eyes by AI, and instead of controlling maybe just the samples of what you do, you can control 100%,” he explained.

This integration of AI allows Rolex to maintain its high standards, ensuring that each watch meets the brand’s rigorous quality benchmarks. However, Dufour made it clear that technology does not replace the human touch entirely.

The Human Element in Craftsmanship

Despite technological advancements, Dufour was keen to highlight the irreplaceable value of human craftsmanship in the watchmaking process. He noted that while machines play a vital role in production, skilled artisans are essential for activities that require intricate manual work.

“They are watchmakers. They can’t do everything by robots,” he remarked, reinforcing the notion that the artistry of watchmaking is a convergence of human skill and advanced technology.

Rolex employs over 15,500 individuals globally, with around 80% of its workforce based in Switzerland. This significant number reflects the company’s commitment to maintaining a strong presence in its home country, further underpinning the quality of Swiss watchmaking.
