HMM Forms Joint Venture to Boost LPG Shipping

Collaboration with B International Shipping & Logistics

South Korea’s prominent shipping company, HMM, is taking significant steps to bolster its presence in the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) market. The company has announced a new joint venture with B International Shipping & Logistics, a member of the BGN group, aiming to enhance its LPG shipping capabilities.

The newly formed joint venture, named HMMB INT Shipping, will be headquartered in Singapore. This partnership is designed to operate two very large gas carriers (VLGCs), each boasting a capacity of 88,000 cubic meters. These vessels will be deployed under a 10-year contract, which includes an option to extend the agreement for an additional five years.

Vessel Development and Delivery Timeline

The two VLGCs are currently under construction at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. Their anticipated delivery is set for the first half of 2027, marking a significant investment in HMM’s future operations. By incorporating advanced shipping capabilities, HMM aims to better serve the growing global demand for LPG transportation.

Equal Stake Partnership

In this joint venture, both HMM and B International Shipping & Logistics will have equal stakes. Each company holds a 50% share, reflecting a balanced investment approach as they collaborate to expand their LPG shipping operations.

B International Shipping, part of the BGN group, is recognized for its extensive experience in the LPG sector, managing approximately 14 million tons of LPG annually. The company operates a robust fleet of over 40 LPG vessels, positioning it as a key player in the industry.

HMM’s Strategic Shift

HMM’s foray back into the LPG sector marks a notable turnaround since it suspended its LPG operations in 2016 after managing five vessels. This new venture aligns with HMM’s broader strategic plan aimed at enhancing its bulk business portfolio, particularly as outlined in its 2030 mid-to-long-term strategy. The company intends to grow its fleet focused on LPG and ammonia to a total of 20 vessels by the year 2030.

In a proactive measure, HMM has already acquired three mid-sized LPG vessels earlier this year to further solidify its position in the market. This strategic move highlights HMM’s commitment to not just re-entering the LPG transportation business but also expanding it.

Meeting Growing Demand for Gas Transportation

An official from HMM emphasized that this joint venture represents a strategic response to the increasing global demand for gas transportation. The initiative is not only about expanding shipping capacity; it also aims to set the groundwork for future collaborations in low-carbon and environmentally sustainable energy logistics.

As the world focuses more on energy efficiency and sustainability, HMM’s approach underscores a commitment to adapting to changing market dynamics and fostering innovation in energy logistics. This partnership with B International Shipping & Logistics is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future landscape of the LPG shipping industry.
