ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025: Deepti Sharma and Amanjot Kaur Shine in India’s Victory Over Sri Lanka in Opener

India’s Resilience Shines in Women’s World Cup Opener Against Sri Lanka

India made a striking statement in the opening match of the Women’s World Cup, staging a sensational comeback to defeat Sri Lanka by 59 runs in Guwahati, amidst the challenges posed by rain and unexpected middle-order collapses. This electrifying contest unfolded before a lively crowd of 22,843 fans, setting a record for attendance at a Women’s World Cup group match.

The Dramatic Middle-Order Collapse

Set to bat first, India had a mix of promising starts and dramatic twists. Initially cruising along, they shocked their supporters by losing four wickets for just four runs over the course of 11 balls. This alarming slide was catalyzed by the off-spin of Sri Lankan bowler Inoka Ranaweera, who delivered a devastating 26th over that saw three Indian batswomen succumb to her bowling. At this juncture, India found themselves precariously placed at 124 for 6, the game seemingly slipping from their grasp.

A Match-Winning Partnership

However, amid the chaos, Amanjot Kaur and Deepti Sharma emerged as the unsung heroes. Their resolute partnership of 103 runs for the seventh wicket turned the tide in favor of the home side. While Kaur was handed multiple lifelines—dropped four times throughout her innings—she capitalized on these opportunities to guide her team out of trouble, finishing with a commendable score of 57. Sharma, steady and focused, complemented Kaur superbly, contributing an impressive 53 runs that came right down to the last ball of the innings.

Late Flourish to a Competitive Total

In the latter part of the innings, Sneh Rana provided vital momentum with a brisk 28 off just 15 deliveries. Her late onslaught helped India recover to post a competitive total of 269 for 8 wickets, even after rain intervention reduced their innings to 47 overs. The Indian batting lineup, although rocky, displayed remarkable resilience and depth when it mattered most.

Sri Lanka’s Challenging Run Chase

With a revised target of 271 due to the rain adjustments, Sri Lanka began their chase confidently, reaching 82 for 1 early on. Their captain, Chamari Athapaththu, led the charge with a solid 43 but her dismissal at a critical moment in the 15th over proved to be a significant turning point. Athapaththu’s second-wicket partnership of 52 runs with Harshitha Samarawickrama had kept the chase viable; however, the team seemed to lack the necessary batting depth effectively to counter the Indian bowling attack.

The Downward Spiral for Sri Lanka

Post Athapaththu’s wicket, Sri Lanka faced a sharp decline in momentum, spiraling to 140 for 6, which drastically altered the dynamics of the match. Unable to rediscover their rhythm, they were ultimately bowled out for 211 runs in the 46th over, succumbing to the pressure fueled by India’s tactical bowling strategy.

Key Performers with the Ball

Sharma not only shined with the bat but also excelled with the ball, claiming impressive bowling figures of 3 for 54. She was well-supported by her fellow spinners, Sneh Rana and Shree Charani, who contributed with figures of 2 for 32 and 2 for 37, respectively, effectively dismantling Sri Lanka’s middle and lower order.

Looking Ahead in the Tournament

As the curtain rises on this eagerly anticipated tournament, the focus shifts to upcoming matches, including defending champions Australia facing New Zealand in Indore, and England’s debut against South Africa later in the week. The excitement surrounding the Women’s World Cup continues to build, with India’s performance serving as a thrilling reminder of the competitive spirit and resilience of women’s cricket on the international stage.
