Smiths Detection Secures Major Contract for Enhanced Security at Dubai International Airport

On the opening day of the Airport Show 2025, Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects announced a significant partnership with Smiths Detection to implement advanced checkpoint screening systems at Dubai International Airport (DXB). This strategic move underscores Dubai’s commitment to redefining airport security and enhancing passenger experiences at one of the busiest airports globally.

Revolutionary Screening Technology

At the heart of this multi-year agreement lies the deployment of Smiths Detection’s HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX Model-S computed tomography (CT) scanners. These state-of-the-art devices are designed to transform security screenings by providing high-resolution 3D imagery. A standout feature of these new systems is the ability for passengers to retain electronics and liquids in their carry-on luggage during the screening process. This innovation significantly reduces processing times, thereby streamlining the travel experience.

Enhancing Efficiency and Security

The introduction of the HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX Model-S scanners at Terminals 1, 2, and 3 is expected not only to boost security but also to work in tandem with features aimed at enhancing efficiency. The systems are equipped with iCMORE automatic object recognition software, which allows for faster detection of prohibited items. Moreover, automated tray return and smart lane management functionalities further expedite the passenger flow.

These upgrades are crucial, especially given DXB’s status as a global leader in air travel and its continuous record-breaking passenger traffic numbers. The enhancements aim to ensure that security measures keep pace with international demand and expectations.

A Commitment to Innovation

The project forms part of a broader initiative aimed at creating a seamless and secure aviation infrastructure. His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, president of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and chairman of Dubai Airports, articulated that “Dubai continues to lead the world in aviation excellence by investing in the latest security screening technologies.” This commitment serves not only to enhance passenger safety and travel experiences but also bolsters Dubai’s reputation as a premier global aviation hub.

Collaborative Efforts Toward Smart Infrastructure

His Excellency Eng. Khalifa Al Zaffin, executive chairman of Dubai Aviation City Corporation, underscored the significance of this partnership with Smiths Detection as a reflection of the organization’s ongoing dedication to smart infrastructure integration across its airports. The technological advancements are set to align with Dubai’s vision for intelligent airport transformation.

Her Excellency Eng. Suzanne Al Anani, chief executive officer of Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects, emphasized the proactive approach being taken to develop secure and intelligent airport infrastructure. She stated, “This project exemplifies our commitment to enabling safe, seamless, and high-capacity travel through the integration of smart, advanced technologies.”

Support from Smiths Detection

Tom Squier, the managing director of Smiths Detection Middle East, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, highlighting how their advanced screening solutions would not only enhance detection efficiency but also support Dubai’s overarching vision for safe and smart air travel. With a focus on innovation, this partnership aims to set new benchmarks for airport security screening systems.

Through this significant upgrade, Dubai International Airport is positioning itself at the forefront of airport technology, ensuring that it remains equipped to handle the complexities and challenges of modern air travel while providing a quality experience for passengers.
