UAE’s first commercial satellite Altair-1 reaches orbit as AI constellation expands

Published:

The UAE’s first commercially built satellite, Altair-1, successfully reached orbit on October 1, 2026, marking a significant advancement in the country’s satellite manufacturing capabilities. Launched aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-18 mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, Altair-1 is the first of ten AI-enabled Earth observation satellites planned under the Altair constellation, which aims to enhance the UAE’s position in the global space industry.

Developed by Abu Dhabi-based Orbitworks, Altair-1 was designed, assembled, and tested at the company’s facility in Abu Dhabi before its launch. The satellite separated from the Falcon 9 rocket and entered its commissioning phase shortly after deployment, with mission data confirming its successful signal acquisition.

Advanced Features of Altair-1

Altair-1 is equipped with five integrated sensors that enable it to collect diverse types of information during its orbital missions. These sensors cover optical imagery, shortwave infrared, thermal imaging, hyperspectral sensing, and radio frequency detection. Additionally, the satellite features onboard NVIDIA GPUs, allowing for rapid data processing in orbit, which significantly reduces the time required to convert raw data into actionable intelligence.

Once all ten satellites are operational by 2027, the Altair constellation will be capable of revisiting any location on Earth approximately every four hours. This frequent revisit capability, combined with onboard AI, is designed to facilitate quicker detection of events and generation of actionable information, with potential applications in disaster response, maritime awareness, environmental monitoring, and national security.

Manufacturing and Future Plans

Altair-1 was produced at Orbitworks’ state-of-the-art satellite manufacturing facility in Khalifa Economic Zones Abu Dhabi (KEZAD), which is the first of its kind in the Middle East dedicated to commercial satellite production. The facility has the capacity to produce up to 50 satellites annually, positioning the UAE as a growing player in the global satellite manufacturing market.

Orbitworks, established in 2024 as a joint venture between UAE-based Marlan Space and Loft Orbital, aims to expand its manufacturing capabilities further. The company has already secured agreements with various clients, including multiple French government entities and local organizations, for access to the Altair constellation’s services.

Looking ahead, Altair-1 is part of a larger initiative involving a $1 billion consortium with international partners to develop a comprehensive AI-powered satellite infrastructure. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance the UAE’s satellite capabilities and foster economic diversification through advanced manufacturing and technology.

As Orbitworks prepares to bring Altair-1 into commercial operation, it plans to provide high-resolution imagery and additional mission materials to its clients, further solidifying the UAE’s position in the global space economy.
