Dubai RTA Unveils Hessa Street Development Project, Boosting Capacity to 16,000 Vehicles Per Hour and Reducing Travel Time to Four Minutes

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has officially completed the Hessa Street Development Project, enhancing connectivity between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road. The project, which spans 4.5 kilometers, features widened lanes and improved intersections, effectively doubling the road’s capacity and significantly reducing travel times.

The newly upgraded Hessa Street now accommodates four lanes in each direction at key intersections, including Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Asayel Street, First Al Khail Street, and Al Khail Road. The enhancements are expected to streamline traffic flow, cutting journey times from 15 minutes to just four minutes.

During a recent inspection, His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, emphasized that this initiative aligns with the leadership’s vision to advance road infrastructure, enhance traffic management, and support Dubai’s rapid urban expansion.

Capacity Expansion

The Hessa Street Development Project has effectively increased the road’s capacity from 8,000 vehicles per hour to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions. This 100% increase is crucial for accommodating the anticipated population growth in the surrounding areas, which is projected to exceed 640,000 residents by 2030.

Al Tayer highlighted that Hessa Street serves as a vital corridor for several residential and commercial areas, including Al Sufouh 2, Al Barsha Residential Area, and Jumeirah Village Circle. The improvements are expected to facilitate smoother traffic movement and enhance accessibility for residents and commuters alike.

Project Details

The project encompasses the development of four major intersections. At the intersection with Sheikh Zayed Road, a two-lane directional ramp has been constructed above the Dubai Metro Red Line, allowing traffic to turn right onto Hessa Street towards Emirates Road.

Improvements at the intersection with First Al Khail Street have increased the number of lanes on the existing bridge from three to four in each direction, alongside enhancements to the signal-controlled surface intersection.

At the intersection with Al Asayel Street, the existing bridge has been expanded from two to four lanes in each direction, facilitated by the construction of a parallel bridge and additional surface-level traffic improvements.

The final intersection with Al Khail Road features a new two-lane direct elevated ramp, designed to accommodate traffic heading north towards Sharjah. Additional bridges have also been constructed to facilitate traffic flow from Hessa Street towards Deira.

Phase Two Developments

The RTA has initiated the second phase of the Hessa Street Development Project, which will extend from its intersection with Al Khail Road to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road over a distance of three kilometers.

This phase includes the construction of three main intersections, featuring bridges totaling 8,835 meters and a 480-meter tunnel. The planned upgrades aim to double the road capacity from 4,000 to 8,000 vehicles per hour, while also reducing travel times from 24 minutes to just five minutes.

The second phase is expected to serve ten residential and development areas, benefiting approximately 650,000 residents. Traffic volume on the roads included in this phase is estimated to reach around half a million trips per day, supporting key areas such as Jumeirah Village Circle, Arjan, Dubai Science Park, Al Barsha South, Jumeirah Lakes Towers, Jumeirah Islands, Barsha Heights, The Greens, and Emirates Hills.
