Honoring Innovative Educational Initiatives
On December 8, 2023, a significant ceremony took place in Baku, the vibrant capital of Azerbaijan. Sheikh Rashid bin Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Supreme President of the Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation for Medical and Educational Sciences, honored the winners of the fourth cycle of the Hamdan–ICESCO Prize for the Development of Educational Facilities in the Islamic World. This prestigious award is a collaborative effort with the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), aiming to recognize and support educational advancements across the Islamic nations.
A Ceremony with Global Representation
The awards were presented during the “Launch of the Artificial Intelligence Index in the Islamic World” conference, which featured prominent attendees. Among the distinguished guests were His Excellency Humaid Mohammed Al Qatami, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Hamdan Foundation, along with various senior officials, representatives from international organizations, and leading scholars. This diverse gathering highlighted the global commitment to enhancing educational resources in the Islamic world.
Pioneering Projects Recognized
This year’s award celebrated three transformative projects hailing from Yemen, Morocco, and Azerbaijan. Together, these initiatives represent an investment exceeding USD 28 million, aimed at fostering educational development and improving infrastructures in multiple communities. The recognition not only underscores the importance of education but also shines a light on grassroots efforts making a genuine impact.
Projects Making a Difference
The Model Schools Project from the Hadramout Foundation for Human Development in Yemen was acknowledged for its outstanding contribution to educational infrastructure, empowering students in targeted areas. Meanwhile, the Moroccan Foundation for Early Childhood Education received accolades for its project that focuses on equipping classrooms in rural, semi-rural, and urban settings, thus enhancing early childhood education.
The Heydar Aliyev Foundation from Azerbaijan also garnered recognition for its far-reaching Support of Education Program, which operates across several countries, including Georgia, Pakistan, and Vietnam. This wide-reaching initiative aims to boost access to education and improve educational facilities on an international scale.
Strengthening Collaborations
The award ceremony also served as a platform for a new cooperation agreement between the Hamdan Foundation and ICESCO. This memorandum of understanding seeks to strengthen institutional partnerships and expand collaborative efforts to enhance educational initiatives in member states. Such agreements are essential for sustaining progress in the region’s educational landscape.

Throughout the event, Sheikh Rashid bin Hamdan emphasized the foundation’s unwavering belief in the importance of investing in education.
