Eid Al Adha 2026: Discover Kalba’s Scenic Wonders from Hanging Gardens to Mangroves

The upcoming Eid Al Adha break presents an opportunity for residents and visitors in the UAE to explore the picturesque landscapes of Kalba, situated on the eastern coast. This destination offers a unique blend of mountains, beaches, and natural beauty, making it an ideal getaway.

As temperatures are projected to rise across the UAE during the Eid holidays, Kalba may provide a cooler alternative compared to inland areas. The National Center of Meteorology (NCM) forecasts that inland temperatures could soar between 43°C and 48°C, while mountainous regions are expected to range from 28°C to 35°C. Coastal areas, including Kalba, are predicted to experience highs between 35°C and 43°C. The NCM has advised residents to limit direct sunlight exposure during peak afternoon hours, emphasizing the importance of planning road trips accordingly.

Why You Should Discover Kalba This Eid Al Adha

Kalba, nestled between the Hajar Mountains and the Gulf of Oman, has emerged as a favored ecotourism destination. It offers an affordable escape for families and nature enthusiasts, featuring nature reserves, wildlife conservation centers, and expansive beaches. Visitors are encouraged to prepare for their journey with snacks, sunscreen, and ample water, as there is much to explore.

To maximize outdoor activities such as hiking and kayaking, an early morning departure is advisable, especially given the anticipated peak afternoon temperatures. The cooler mountain areas near Kalba, including the Hanging Gardens and Al Hefaiyah region, are particularly pleasant during morning and evening hours. Beach and mangrove activities are best scheduled around sunrise or sunset to avoid the midday heat.

How to Get There

Kalba is an exclave of Sharjah located on the UAE’s east coast. For those traveling from Abu Dhabi, Dubai, or Sharjah, the most straightforward route is via the E102 highway (Sharjah-Kalba Road), which connects with the country’s major highways.

  • From E11 (Sheikh Zayed Road), take the exit near Sharjah City Centre towards S112 King Faisal Street, which connects to E102.
  • From E311 (Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road), take Exit 65 towards E102.
  • From E611 (Emirates Road), take the Sharjah Mosque interchange exit onto E102.

The drive from Sharjah city takes approximately one hour, with Kalba situated around 120 kilometers east of Sharjah.

1. Kalba Hanging Gardens

One of the first notable landmarks along the route is the Kalba Hanging Gardens, renowned for its cascading waterfalls and stunning mountain views. Upon entering the mountainous stretch, travelers will pass through the Kalba Tunnel, with the Hanging Gardens visible shortly after exiting on the right-hand side.

Spanning 1.6 million square feet and positioned 281 meters above sea level, the Hanging Gardens features over 100,000 trees and landscaped terraces. Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls, scenic train rides, or explore various hiking trails suited for different fitness levels. The gardens also include children’s play areas and cafes offering light meals, making it a convenient first stop for families.

2. Al Hefaiyah Lake

Just a kilometer further lies Al Hefaiyah Lake, which serves as both a vital water reservoir and a scenic recreational area surrounded by mountains and greenery. Visitors can take leisurely walks around the lake or drive along the 3-kilometer dual-lane road that encircles it.

The site includes a rest house with views of the surrounding peaks, the Hanging Gardens, and waterfalls. For adventure enthusiasts, the area offers water sports facilities, hiking trails, and shaded children’s play areas. Nearby, the Al Hefaiyah Mosque features geometric and floral designs and houses a library. A short two-minute drive leads to the Al Hefaiyah Conservation Centre, home to 30 native mountain and desert species.

3. Al Qurm Protected Area

After exploring the mountains, visitors can head towards the coastline to discover Kalba’s rich biodiversity. The Al Qurm Protected Area, commonly known as the Kalba mangroves, is located where the E102 highway meets the coast. This reserve is home to rare bird species, turtles, and diverse marine life. Those who spend time in the protected area may spot the endangered Arabian collared kingfishers soaring above the mangroves, while hawksbill and green turtles are often seen nesting on nearby shores.

Guided kayak or paddleboard tours offer an excellent way to experience the reserve, allowing visitors to navigate the waterways while observing the surrounding wildlife.

4. Kalba Corniche Park

Next on the itinerary is Kalba Corniche Park, a favored stop for both locals and tourists. The park features jogging and cycling tracks, shaded seating areas, and children’s play zones, making it an ideal spot for a relaxed family picnic after a day of exploration.

5. Kalba Beach Corniche

Adjacent to the park is Kalba Beach Corniche, where long sandy shores meet clear turquoise waters. This beach area is equipped with visitor-friendly facilities, including jogging tracks, shaded benches overlooking the sea, and restrooms. Compared to some of the UAE’s more crowded beaches, Kalba offers a quieter and more laid-back atmosphere, making it a perfect conclusion to a long road trip.
