Dubai’s nol Card Guide: Choose the Right Card for Seamless Public Transport Access

Dubai’s public transport system, encompassing buses, ferries, the Metro, and trams, requires the use of a nol card for fare payment. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai provides these cards, which can be acquired at bus stations or online for personalized options. There are four types of nol cards available: Gold, Silver, Blue, and Red. Understanding the features and benefits of each card is essential for selecting the one that best suits your commuting needs.

Understanding the nol Card

The nol card serves as a payment method for public transportation and can also be utilized at various retail outlets that accept it. Additionally, it allows users to pay for public parking, taxi rides, and fuel at ENOC petrol stations. This multifunctional card is vital for anyone relying on Dubai’s extensive public transport network.

Selecting the Right Card

Choosing the appropriate nol card depends on your travel frequency and the type of experience you seek. Below are the details of each card option:

1. nol Silver Card

The Silver card is designed for regular commuters and everyday users. It permits travel on buses, the Metro, trams, and ferries. Valid for five years, the card can be topped up as needed, with a maximum balance of AED 1,000. No identification is required for purchase, which can be done at any RTA Metro station or select bus stations equipped with nol card machines.

  • Cost: AED 25 (includes AED 19 balance)
  • Validity: Five years

2. nol Gold Card

Similar to the Silver card, the Gold card offers access to premium Gold Class seats on the Metro and Tram for an additional fare. This card can also be purchased at any RTA Metro station without ID. However, registering the card to your name is advisable for reissuance in case of loss.

  • Cost: AED 25 (includes AED 19 balance)
  • Validity: Five years

3. Blue nol Card

The Blue card is a personalized option that includes your photograph, name, and passenger category, such as student or Person of Determination. This card is essential for those applying for special discounts. Even if you do not fall into these categories, the Blue card allows for a higher top-up limit of AED 5,000. An Emirates ID is required for application, which can be completed at Metro stations or online.

For special category applications, the following documents are necessary:

  • Students: A letter of enrollment and a recent photograph.
  • Persons of Determination: A valid PoD card and a recent photograph.
  • Seniors: A recent photograph.
  • Cost: AED 70 (includes AED 20 balance)
  • Validity: Five years

4. nol Red Ticket

The Red ticket is suitable for occasional users, functioning as a trip ticket that can be topped up based on the desired route. Unlike the other cards, it is a paper ticket and can only be used for one mode of transport at a time. It can be purchased at any Metro station or bus station with a nol ticket machine.

  • Cost: AED 2
  • Usage Limit: Up to 10 journeys or 5 daily passes
  • Validity: 90 days or 10 trips

Fare Calculation for Trips

The RTA has segmented Dubai’s public transport system into seven zones, with trip fares determined by the number of zones traversed and the type of card used. For instance, the fare will differ based on whether a Gold or Blue nol card is utilized, as the Gold card provides access to premium seating.

Fares for Traveling Between Zones

  • Within One Zone
  • Within Two Adjacent Zones
  • More Than Two Zones

For example, the fare for a Blue card user traveling within one zone is AED 7.50. At the end of each journey, the fare will be calculated based on the total number of zones crossed.
