At 33 years old, Al Lutfi, who identifies as being on the autism spectrum, is redefining creativity through his unique monochrome cityscapes. His work features iconic UAE landmarks such as the Burj Khalifa and the Zayed National Museum, and he dreams of showcasing his art on the façades of these monuments.
Unlike many artists who confine their creations to traditional canvases, Al Lutfi envisions his art as dynamic, wanting it to be displayed in vibrant public spaces. His signature style is characterized by bold black and white drawings, a medium he finds most comfortable. There, he met his mentor, Gulshan Kavarana, who has played a pivotal role in his development.
Kavarana noted that when Al Lutfi first arrived at the studio, he was unaware of his autism and exhibited behaviors typical of the condition, such as stimming. She emphasized the importance of creating a supportive environment where he could express himself freely. This acceptance allowed him to flourish both personally and artistically.
Finding Confidence and Purpose
With Kavarana’s guidance, Al Lutfi learned essential life skills alongside his artistic training. He became adept at social interactions and developed a strong sense of self. His artistic voice grew as he infused humor into his work, and he established a unique signature style that has become his hallmark.
Al Lutfi has also made significant strides in his personal life. He learned to drive at 19 and has prioritized his health, losing 53 kg through lifestyle changes. His determination extends beyond art; he actively engages with children on the autism spectrum, offering them guidance and support in his studio.
A Future Full of Possibility
Al Lutfi’s journey has taken a joyful turn with his recent marriage to Mariam, a Filipina-Egyptian expat who shares his experiences on the autism spectrum. The couple reconnected after a decade apart, thanks to Kavarana, and they share a love for anime and video games.
Looking ahead, Al Lutfi remains optimistic about his future. He encourages parents of children on the autism spectrum to support their dreams, emphasizing the importance of love, respect, and hope. He believes that with encouragement, many children can achieve their aspirations, just as he has.
