UK and UAE Strengthen Ties, Condemn Iran’s Aggression in Joint Statement
His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the UAE, met with the UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, the Rt Hon Yvette Cooper MP, on 18 April 2026. This marked Cooper’s inaugural official visit to the UAE, where discussions focused on the longstanding and robust relationship between the two nations.
Historic Bilateral Discussions
During their meeting, Sheikh Abdullah and Cooper highlighted the deep-rooted UK-UAE partnership, which is anchored in mutual commitments to regional stability, prosperity, and international collaboration. Their dialogue built upon previous discussions held between UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on 9 April.
The two ministers formalised a Framework for enhanced cooperation, encompassing areas such as foreign affairs, defence, trade and investment, artificial intelligence, energy transition, judicial cooperation, and the combat against illicit finance. This Framework aims to establish a long-term bilateral partnership, enhancing mutual resilience.
Addressing Regional Security Concerns
Cooper expressed gratitude to the UAE for its efforts to protect British nationals amid escalating regional tensions. Sheikh Abdullah acknowledged the UK’s ongoing support in response to Iranian aggression. Both leaders underscored the necessity of continued consular cooperation between their nations.
The ministers unequivocally condemned Iran’s recent attacks on the UAE and other regional states, characterising these actions as egregious violations of sovereignty and international law. They cited the UN Charter and stressed that such aggression undermines fundamental principles governing international relations.
Freedom of Navigation and Maritime Security
Recalling UN Security Council resolution 2817 (2026), the ministers denounced Iran’s threats aimed at obstructing international navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. They reaffirmed the significance of ensuring freedom of navigation in accordance with international law, as outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
Additionally, they referenced the International Maritime Organization Council’s decision from 19 March 2026, which condemned Iran’s threats and attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. This situation poses a grave risk to maritime safety and the marine environment.
The ministers welcomed a recent initiative by the UK and France, announced on 17 April, aimed at supporting freedom of navigation and upholding international law, with the backing of an international coalition.
Humanitarian Concerns in Sudan
The ministers also addressed the ongoing conflict in Sudan, condemning attacks against civilians and humanitarian personnel by warring factions. They emphasised the responsibility of these parties to cease hostilities and called on the international community to exert pressure for a resolution. The ministers highlighted the urgent need for an immediate and unconditional truce to facilitate humanitarian access across Sudan, rejecting any politicisation of aid.
They reiterated that Sudan’s future should be determined by its citizens through a civilian-led process, aligning with the aspirations of the Sudanese people for a transition to a civilian government. Recent engagements involving the Quad, the UK, and the European Union were acknowledged as vital for advancing peace in Sudan.
Commitment to Peace in Ukraine
The ministers reaffirmed their dedication to achieving a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in Ukraine, in accordance with international law and the principles of the UN Charter. They welcomed the UAE’s recent facilitation of prisoner exchanges between Ukraine and Russia, which has seen a total of 6,305 prisoners exchanged since the onset of the conflict. Discussions also included potential avenues for cooperation in supporting Ukraine’s recovery.
The two ministers expressed optimism for continued close cooperation and the further development of the UK-UAE relationship in the future.
