Zhang Yiming Surges to USD 92.8 Billion, Overtaking Ambani as Asia’s Second Richest

Zhang Yiming, a 41-year-old engineer from Fujian province, China, has seen his net worth skyrocket from USD 13 billion in March 2019 to USD 92.8 billion today. This remarkable increase has propelled him past Mukesh Ambani, a well-known industrialist, to become Asia’s second richest individual. The shift in rankings underscores a broader trend in wealth distribution across Asia, particularly influenced by advancements in technology and artificial intelligence.

Who Is Zhang Yiming?

Zhang Yiming is a prominent figure in the tech industry, primarily recognized for founding ByteDance, the parent company of the widely popular app TikTok, which boasts over one billion users. Although he stepped down as Chief Executive of ByteDance in 2021 and now resides in Singapore, his influence remains significant. Zhang began his entrepreneurial journey in 2009 with the launch of 99fang.com, a property search platform, after working as an engineer at Kuxun.com, a tourism search site, for three years.

In 2012, he established ByteDance, which quickly became one of the fastest-growing tech companies in history. Since Bloomberg began tracking his wealth, Zhang’s fortune has increased more than sevenfold, making him the wealthiest individual in China and the second wealthiest in Asia as of June 3, 2026.

How USD 24 Billion Arrived Overnight

Zhang’s ascent past Ambani was facilitated by a valuation adjustment rather than a specific business event. Following the U.S. House of Representatives’ passage of a bill in March 2024 aimed at banning TikTok unless its Chinese ownership was divested, a 25 percent risk discount was applied to ByteDance’s valuation. However, this discount was reduced to 10 percent on June 2, reflecting the completion of the U.S. sale and significant regulatory updates from institutional investors.

This adjustment led to an immediate increase in Zhang’s wealth by over USD 24 billion, as analyzed by Bloomberg based on valuations from major investors, including BlackRock and Fidelity Investments. The regulatory uncertainties that had clouded ByteDance’s valuation for over two years were significantly alleviated.

TikTok, Doubao, and the AI Engine

The valuation adjustment alone does not fully account for ByteDance’s growth trajectory. The company has been developing a secondary growth engine independent of TikTok. The success of TikTok, alongside its Doubao AI chatbot—which has garnered over 300 million monthly users—has been pivotal. ByteDance is transitioning its AI strategy from aggressive user acquisition to a tiered subscription model, testing price points between RMB 68 and RMB 500 per month, marking a significant structural shift.

In a market where Chinese consumers have traditionally been reluctant to pay for digital services, Doubao aims to change this behavior. Furthermore, reports indicate that ByteDance is contemplating an investment of up to USD 70 billion in 2026 to enhance its AI capabilities and compete with leading global AI firms, with much of this funding expected to come from the company’s robust earnings.

Zhang Yiming is 2nd, Where Does Ambani Stand Now?

Mukesh Ambani is not facing a crisis; he has become the third richest person in Asia, with a net worth of USD 86.9 billion. Gautam Adani remains the richest in Asia at USD 117.4 billion. Ambani has experienced fluctuations in wealth over the past decade, often influenced by the performance of China’s tech giants. Reliance Industries continues to expand in telecommunications, retail, and renewable energy sectors. However, the market valuations driven by technology and AI have allowed Zhang to maintain his lead.

The wealth gap between Zhang and Ambani is approximately USD 6 billion, a significant margin in billionaire terms. Reliance’s ongoing growth in green energy and the expansion of Jio could potentially narrow this gap, depending on market dynamics. Currently, Ambani finds himself in an unfamiliar position: third in his own continent, sandwiched between an Indian infrastructure billionaire above him and a Chinese tech founder below. The wealth landscape in Asia is evolving rapidly, with a noticeable shift towards artificial intelligence.
