The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower programme is designed for individuals with conditions that are not immediately visible, such as chronic pain, autism, anxiety, and dementia. By participating in this programme, visitors can discreetly signal their need for additional support, allowing museum staff to provide the necessary assistance.

Staff Training and Readiness

As the museum gears up for its public opening in December 2025, it aims to have up to 80% of its staff trained in the Hidden Disabilities programme. This extensive training ensures that employees are well-equipped to recognize and respond to the needs of visitors with hidden disabilities.

Identifying Support Needs

Visitors who wish to utilize the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower programme can obtain a lanyard from the information or ticketing desks. This lanyard serves as a visual cue for staff, indicating that the wearer may require extra time or support during their visit. Museum staff will also wear Sunflower pins, making them easily identifiable as trained individuals ready to assist.

Dr. Peter Magee, the Director of Zayed National Museum, emphasizes that accessibility is woven into the very fabric of the museum’s operations. • Quiet Hours: Specific times when the museum is less crowded, allowing for a more peaceful experience.
• Wheelchair-Accessible Routes: Ensuring that all areas of the museum are easily navigable.
• Tactile Stations: Interactive displays that allow visitors to engage with exhibits through touch.
• Multimedia Resources: Interpretive materials available in various formats, including captioned videos and sensory maps.

Engaging Neurodivergent Visitors

The museum’s Access Programmes are particularly beneficial for neurodivergent individuals, including those with autism or sensory sensitivities.
