Celebrating 60 Years of BinSina Pharmacy: A Legacy of Care and Community
As BinSina Pharmacy commemorates its 60th anniversary, the healthcare and retail landscape in the UAE has transformed significantly since its inception in 1965. For Zaid S. Al Khayyat, Managing Director of Al Khayyat Investments (AKI), the principles of care, trust, and purpose established by his father remain the foundation of the business today.
The Origins of a Legacy
The journey of AKI began with a modest pharmacy located in Dubai’s Nasser Square. Zaid reflects on the vision of his father, Dr. Saad F. Al Khayyat, a surgeon deeply committed to the well-being of his community. “His passion for people has been the cornerstone of AKI since day one,” Zaid shares.
From that single pharmacy, the vision expanded. In 1979, Dr. Al Khayyat partnered with the Ras Al Khaimah government to establish Julphar, the UAE’s first pharmaceutical manufacturing company. By 1982, he founded Alphamed, and eventually laid the groundwork for what would become Al Khayyat Investments. This evolution has positioned AKI as one of the UAE’s most diversified family businesses, spanning various industries while maintaining a focus on community care.
Celebrating Six Decades of Growth
Today, BinSina Pharmacy stands as one of the largest pharmacy chains in the UAE, and AKI’s healthcare division has expanded into pharmaceuticals, medical lab equipment, and more. Zaid expresses pride in how the company’s journey reflects the UAE’s remarkable transformation. “From our first pharmacy to a trusted name nationwide, BinSina has grown alongside the UAE’s progress,” he notes.
What sets BinSina apart, according to Zaid, is the human connection. “It’s not about the number of stores we have, but the impact we create and the compassion we embody. BinSina Pharmacy serves as a true community pharmacy, where people feel valued and supported.” This commitment to community extends beyond healthcare; it encompasses initiatives like blood donation drives, wellness events, and programs aimed at supporting underserved groups.
A Diverse Portfolio
While healthcare remains AKI’s foundation, it has evolved into a broader ecosystem. “Healthcare and wellness have always anchored AKI,” Zaid explains. The company’s growth has been characterized by a steady and deliberate approach, focusing on one decision and one relationship at a time.
This method has resulted in a cohesive business portfolio where each unit complements the others. “We’ve created a constellation of businesses that enhance and support one another,” he states. From fitness and lifestyle initiatives that promote well-being to contracting and landscaping projects that transform plans into public spaces, AKI’s diverse offerings reflect a commitment to community welfare.
Balancing Legacy with Innovation
As a second-generation leader, Zaid S. Al Khayyat views himself as both a steward of his family’s legacy and a pioneer for the future. He credits his father, who continues to serve as Chairman, for instilling values that prioritize people and impact. “I’ve learned that every detail matters and that business is fundamentally about care and making a difference,” he shares.
This foundation allows AKI to remain agile while staying true to its core values. “Balancing legacy with innovation can be challenging, but our people-first culture keeps us grounded,” Zaid explains. He believes that the company’s culture is what truly differentiates AKI. “Our success is not just visible; it’s built on the countless moments that have shaped our journey. A company is only as strong as its people.”
Today, AKI operates across nine industries in nine countries, employing over 11,000 individuals. Yet, Zaid emphasizes that the core principles remain unchanged.
Healthcare as a Cornerstone for the Future
Looking ahead, healthcare will continue to be a vital component of AKI’s growth strategy. “I envision healthcare and wellness remaining central to our mission,” Zaid asserts. The company aims to enhance accessibility and innovation in these sectors while also exploring growth opportunities in logistics, local manufacturing, and retail that align with regional priorities.
Regardless of how diversified the business becomes, the mission remains clear: “The guiding question is always the same: are we making a meaningful difference in people’s lives?” For Zaid, this question transcends strategy; it’s deeply personal. “The lesson my father imparted to me is that business is about trust, compassion, and leaving a legacy for future generations. This spirit has been integral to our journey and will continue to guide us for years to come.”
