Tejas Fighter Jet Crash Shocks Dubai Air Show Attendees

A Day of Celebration Turns into Tragedy

During the recent Dubai Air Show, a tragic incident involving the Indian Air Force’s Tejas fighter jet left attendees in disbelief. Witnessing an aerial display is typically a thrilling experience, but for many, Friday’s event became a moment of shock. Abu Bakr, a real estate advisor and spectator, recorded the moments leading up to the crash, capturing footage that many wished they hadn’t seen.

Eyewitness Accounts

Reflecting on the harrowing event, Bakr described how the fighter jet performed maneuvers alongside others before suddenly losing altitude. “At first, everything seemed normal,” he noted, “but then the jet began to dip more than we expected. We thought the pilot would pull up, but unfortunately, that didn’t happen.” With a heavy heart, he recalled the moment the aircraft crashed, stating, “No one could believe it was actually happening. This type of incident has never occurred here before, and for many, it was the first time witnessing something so catastrophic.”

He emphasized that the experience felt surreal. “It was unbelievable to watch something like that unfold in front of us.”

The Crowd’s Reaction

Bakr was not alone in his shock; hundreds of attendees gathered for the final day of the Middle East’s largest aviation event witnessed the tragic spectacle. The excitement among the crowd was palpable prior to the incident, with many having checked which jets would be performing. “We were eager to see the Tejas in action,” Bakr shared. “As Indians, we were recording it proudly, completely unaware of the tragedy that was about to unfold.”

In the immediate aftermath of the crash, many in the crowd believed the pilot had ejected safely. However, upon reviewing the recorded footage, Bakr realized this was not the case—the pilot did not exit the aircraft.

Details of the Incident

The single-seat Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) had been performing for approximately eight minutes and completed two to three laps before it went into a nose-dive around 2:15 PM local time. Preliminary reports suggest that the pilot failed to recover from a low-altitude negative-G maneuver. The Tejas fighter jet, developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), was part of a squadron based in Sulur, Tamil Nadu, and has been in service since 2016.

Investigative Measures

In light of the incident, the Indian Air Force announced that a court of inquiry would be established to investigate the cause of the crash. This tragic event marks the second occurrence of a Tejas aircraft crash in less than two years. The previous incident took place in March 2024 in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, which resulted in a safe ejection by the pilot.

As attendees left the air show in disbelief, the tragic end to what should have been a celebratory event prompted conversations about safety measures and the unpredictability of aviation displays. The Air Show, known for showcasing technological advancements in aviation, now faces scrutiny as authorities work to understand what went wrong.

With this incident, the legacy of the Tejas, regarded as a significant accomplishment in Indian aerospace engineering, is now intertwined with the reality of its operational risks.
