What’s the story
In the late 1990s, Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan received an unusual invitation that would put his integrity to the test. Invited by members of the underworld to a party in Dubai, Khan faced a dilemma that few can fathom. Despite persistent pressure, offers of money, and even threats, he stood firm in his decision not to attend the event. Speaking to The Lallantop, Khan detailed how the situation unfolded, revealing the lengths to which he would go to uphold his principles.
Khan recalls how he was ‘pressurized’ to attend the party
Khan’s recollections shed light on the pressures that come with fame. “They tried a lot,” he shared, recounting how the underworld attempted to lure him with monetary offers and job promises. The tone quickly shifted when they pressed, “You have to come now because your presence has already been announced; it’s a prestige issue.” The blend of temptation and manipulation illustrates the dark side of celebrity life.
‘You’re very powerful…’: Khan on threats from underworld
In a gripping testimony, Khan described his candid conversation with the underworld members. “That was our last meeting,” he reflected, standing his ground amidst threats. “You’ve been meeting for a month, and I’ve been telling you from the start that I wouldn’t come.” His insistence was unwavering, emphasizing that while he acknowledged their power, he was resolute: “You can bash me up, tie my hands and legs, and take me forcibly wherever you want, but I wouldn’t come on my own.”
Khan was scared for his family’s safety
Despite his courageous stance, Khan admitted to feeling fear for his loved ones. “I had two small kids at that time, Junaid and Ira, and my parents were concerned,” he revealed. They warned him about the dangers he was courting, leading to the poignant decision he made: “I want to live my life the way I want.” At the time, he was also navigating the complexities of being married to Reena Dutta, adding another layer to his resolve amidst turmoil. Notably, Khan continues to be active in his film career, appearing in projects like Sitaare Zameen Par and gearing up for Coolie.
