Wauwatosa Woman Stranded in Dubai Amid Flight Cancellations
MILWAUKEE — A Wauwatosa woman, Nikki Thompson, finds herself stranded in Dubai as flight cancellations sweep across the Middle East due to escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iranian forces. Nikki was returning from a work trip in India when her layover flight was abruptly canceled, leaving her with scant options for returning home.
Chris Thompson, Nikki’s husband, described the anxiety-filled days since he received a troubling text message from her while she was stuck on the tarmac in Dubai. She indicated that missiles were targeting the city and that they were unable to take off. Since then, Chris has faced sleepless nights worrying about her safety.
Nikki is currently sheltered at a hotel, but she is not located near the U.S. Consulate, which became a site of concern following an Iranian drone strike that set a large fire in the area earlier this week. The ongoing military actions have made it difficult for Americans in the region to secure safe passage back home.
Despite her attempts to book multiple flights to Europe each day, all have been canceled, and she has not been able to connect with anyone at the U.S. State Department for assistance. Alerts advising residents to shelter in place have been issued, prompting Nikki to create a makeshift safe space in her bathroom, where she sleeps when conditions worsen. Chris shared, “It makes you feel helpless as a husband, wanting to support your wife but being miles away.”
The situation has compelled the Thompson family to reach out to Wisconsin’s elected officials for help. They are actively calling and emailing, seeking assistance to facilitate Nikki’s return from Dubai. Chris expressed their desperation, citing the urgency of the situation and their need for clarification on how and when Americans stranded there can return home.
As these events unfold, the U.S. State Department continues to address the challenges faced by American travelers in the region amid ongoing unrest.
