Virginia Commonwealth University Ranked Among World’s Best

Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) has recently secured its place among the world’s elite educational institutions according to the latest rankings by U.S. News & World Report. Featured in the 2025-26 list of Best Global Universities, VCU is ranked alongside the top 20% of universities globally.

When evaluating the standing of universities worldwide, VCU achieved an impressive tie for No. 411, placing it among 2,250 institutions across 105 countries. This ranking reflects the university’s academic prowess and reputation, determined by various performance indicators that examine research metrics, faculty excellence, and educational outcomes.

Beverly Warren, Ed.D., Ph.D., interim provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, expressed pride in VCU’s growing reputation. “This recognition reflects the extraordinary work of our faculty,” she noted. The university is noted for delivering cutting-edge education and impactful research, demonstrating its commitment to global engagement.

Prominent initiatives, such as the integration of AI into curricula and the development of groundbreaking research facilities like the Convergence Labs, further position VCU as a leader among urban public research universities.

Notable Program Rankings

Seventeen individual programs within VCU received accolades in the global rankings, underscoring the institution’s broad spectrum of academic excellence. Among these, Gastroenterology and Hepatology stands out with a remarkable ranking of No. 9 globally. The Surgery program also achieved recognition, tying for No. 74.

Advancements in Health and Medicine

Art Saavedra, M.D., Ph.D., dean of the School of Medicine and executive vice president for medical affairs at VCU Health, emphasized the significance of these rankings. “Our Gastroenterology and Hepatology division is revolutionizing the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of liver disease through transformational research and innovation,” he asserted. The accolades are a testament to the high caliber of research, training, and clinical care offered by VCU across various medical disciplines.

Faculty Expertise and Collaborations

Arun Sanyal, M.D., who serves as chief of the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition, echoed his excitement about the program’s escalating ranking. He highlighted the dedicated faculty and staff who make significant contributions to the program’s reputation for academic excellence. “I am grateful to all of them as we continue building our program and strive to make it a Top 5 program in the world,” Sanyal stated, reflecting a commitment to further advancement.
