UAE Embraces a Wellbeing Economy: Key Insights from “Blooming Futures”

Introduction to the Initiative

On October 29, 2025, in Dubai, Greenpeace Middle East and North Africa, in partnership with SEE Institute and Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, unveiled a pivotal report titled “Blooming Futures: Supporting the UAE’s Journey Toward a Wellbeing Economy.” This comprehensive document presents a strategic framework aimed at enhancing sustainability and prosperity within the UAE, aligning with the nation’s ambitious vision for sustainable development.

The UAE’s Commitment to Sustainable Development

A Leader in Climate Action

The report, crafted by the acclaimed researchers Najla Almatrooshi and Nicole Weber, positions the UAE as a pioneer in rethinking prosperity beyond mere economic indicators like GDP. It outlines a forward-thinking roadmap that focuses on resilience and sustainability through two main strategies: biomimicry—learning from nature—and commons-based stewardship, which is deeply rooted in Emirati and Islamic traditions.

Strategic National Visions

Integral to the report are the UAE’s strategic frameworks, including “We the UAE 2031,” the UAE Centennial Plan 2071, and the “UAE Net Zero by 2050” Strategic Initiative. These visions collectively aim to foster a renewable, wellbeing-centric economy that harmonizes economic growth with environmental preservation.

Practical Steps Toward a Renewable Economy

Innovative Approaches

The report underscores several elements positioning the UAE as a frontrunner in sustainable development. Among these are the adoption of environmental innovations, the application of biomimicry in urban and economic planning, and the incorporation of traditional values in managing shared resources. These elements are vital for public and private sector leaders as they strive to promote an inclusive economy focused on sustainability.

Sustainable Financing

The document also introduces various sustainable financing options, including welfare bonds designed to enhance sectors like education and health, and environmental endowments aimed at supporting renewable energy initiatives and biodiversity conservation.

Insights from the Launch Event

At the launch held at The Sustainable City in Dubai, Ghiwa Nakat, Executive Director of Greenpeace MENA, explained: “The UAE has always been a place for ambitious visions. In a short time, it has transformed aspirations into tangible progress, embedding wellbeing, quality of life, and sustainability into national priorities.”

Nakat emphasized the need for a paradigm shift toward biomimicry in policy and governance. She pointed out examples like desert conservation methods and coral reef ecosystems, suggesting that integrating these natural strategies could pivot the UAE from extraction to regeneration, promoting a sustainable economy that nourishes its social fabric.

Highlighting The Sustainable City

A Model for Future Urban Living

The report features a detailed case study of The Sustainable City in Dubai, developed by SEE Holding, showcasing it as a practical embodiment of community-driven governance and resource management.

Notably, The Sustainable City is the first in the region to operate mainly on solar energy, utilizing over 40,000 solar panels to produce 10 MW of energy. The city’s design encourages reduced car reliance, promoting walking and shared electric vehicles while fostering community engagement through agricultural zones featuring greenhouses and urban farms.

A Benchmark for Sustainability

The Sustainable City serves as a benchmark for future urban developments, balancing human and environmental needs while demonstrating successful low-carbon urban planning.

Academic Contributions to Sustainable Development

Bridging Research and Real-world Impact

Dr. Clio Chaveneau, head of the SAFIR Institute at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, emphasized the institution’s role in supporting the research underpinning the Blooming Futures report. She expressed pride in the scholarly efforts that not only advance knowledge but also contribute to real-world sustainable initiatives.

The Vision for Wellbeing

Najla Almatrooshi, co-author of the report and member of the Ajman Youth Council, articulated the essence of the findings: “Blooming Futures emerges from the belief that wellbeing is a collective endeavor, not a privilege for a few. This report calls us to rethink prosperity—not as exploitation, but as a compassionate cultivation that aligns with nature.”

Almatrooshi envisions the report as both a mirror and a map, reflecting the current state while guiding future endeavors in sustainable development.

The Path Ahead

The comprehensive initiatives and frameworks outlined in “Blooming Futures” highlight the UAE’s dedication to fostering a resilient and inclusive economy. Through innovative approaches and a commitment to sustainability, the nation continues to reinforce its status as a global leader in climate action and sustainable development.
