UN Condemns Strike on Iran School, Kills 160 Children
A recent bombing at the Shajareh Tayyebeh girls’ school in Minab, southern Iran, has raised significant international concern, with the United Nations reporting that the attack resulted in the deaths of more than 160 children. This incident coincided with the onset of military actions by the United States and Israel targeting Iranian positions.
The bombing occurred on Saturday as hostilities escalated, provoking a swift response from global leaders. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that American forces “would not deliberately target a school,” reaffirming the country’s commitment to avoiding civilian casualties during military operations. Meanwhile, Israel announced that it would conduct an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child expressed strong alarm regarding strikes on civilian infrastructure, noting that such attacks have inflicted trauma and injuries on numerous children. The committee underscored the necessity for the protection of children in conflict zones, emphasizing that they should be safeguarded from the impacts of war.
The UN Committee, comprising 18 independent experts, is tasked with monitoring adherence to the Convention on the Rights of the Child. This international agreement aims to ensure the rights of children, including their right to education and protection from violence.
In a related development, the UN human rights office called for accountability from the perpetrators of the bombing, urging those responsible to provide clarity on the events surrounding the attack. However, the office did not specify the parties it believes might be accountable.
Iran’s representative at the United Nations in Geneva, Ali Bahreini, communicated the gravity of the situation in a letter to UN human rights chief Volker Turk, categorizing the strike as “unjustifiable” and “criminal.” This correspondence was sent on March 1, just days before the tragic events unfolded.
As international scrutiny intensifies, there is an urgent call for a thorough investigation into the bombing, with advocates emphasizing the need to protect vulnerable populations amid rising tensions in the region.
