UAE’s Commitment to Global Humanitarian Efforts in 2025
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has reinforced its status as a prominent player in global humanitarian assistance, emerging as the world’s third-largest donor in 2025, contributing an impressive US$1.46 billion. This statistic, derived from the OCHA’s Financial Tracking Service, highlights the nation’s proactive approach to humanitarian challenges worldwide.
A Pledge for the Future: Supporting the UN’s Humanitarian Agenda
In a significant move, the UAE committed US$550 million to back the UN’s Global Humanitarian Overview. This initiative aims to gather US$33 billion in 2026 to aid around 135 million individuals in need across various crises. This pledge underscores the UAE’s dedication to addressing pressing humanitarian issues and reflects its ongoing support for the global community.
Comprehensive Assistance in Gaza
The humanitarian efforts in Gaza have been particularly noteworthy. By December 2025, the UAE had provided over AED9.4 billion in aid, which included more than 100,000 tonnes of essential supplies and two million gallons of potable water. In addition, the UAE facilitated the evacuation of 3,000 patients and their relatives for treatment, demonstrating its commitment to alleviating the suffering in the region. The UAE’s field hospital treated approximately 54,000 cases, while a floating hospital in Al Arish catered to more than 21,000 individuals.
Commitment to Sudan and Yemen
Sudan has also seen substantial assistance from the UAE, amounting to $784 million since 2023, which totals $4.24 billion from 2015 to 2025. This aid is crucial for a country facing numerous challenges.
In Yemen, the UAE allocated $1 billion specifically for the energy sector initiatives. This funding is supporting the development of renewable power plants in Aden and Shabwa, projected to deliver energy to over a million households. Additionally, UAE assistance includes crucial relief efforts such as Ramadan meal provisions, support for families affected by floods, and educational initiatives aimed at improving access to learning for Yemeni children.
Humanitarian Impact in Ukraine
The UAE has also played a mediating role in Ukraine, facilitating the exchange of 4,641 prisoners. Furthermore, its aid agency entered into a $4.5 million agreement to improve the care available at orphanages, showcasing the UAE’s commitment to child welfare amid conflict.
Emergency Aid to Flood-Affected Regions
The UAE’s humanitarian outreach extended to countries wrestling with natural disasters. The nation dispatched 700 tonnes of food supplies to Somalia and over 1,000 tonnes to Chad, where aid assisted around 150,000 victims of recent floods. Additionally, the UAE initiated winter relief campaigns in both Albania and Bangladesh, addressing urgent needs in these regions.
Specialized Relief Operations in Asia and the Pacific
Specialized relief teams from the UAE have been active in crisis-stricken areas such as Myanmar, the Philippines, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka. As part of a broader commitment, the UAE pledged $10 million to enhance disaster response capabilities in various Asian countries and within the Pacific.
Investment in Healthcare and Education
Beyond immediate relief efforts, the UAE’s long-term investments in healthcare and education serve to bolster sustainable development in affected regions. Agreements to construct a fully integrated eye hospital in Uganda, along with a $20 million commitment for healthcare initiatives in East Jerusalem, exemplify this approach. The UAE is also developing the Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Hospital and a dialysis center in Chad, which will expand access to essential medical services.
In education, the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives allocated AED36.7 million to UNHCR programs supporting displaced communities. Simultaneously, the UAE’s Digital School, in collaboration with the ATAYA Initiative, rolled out “Skills Academies” designed to train five million young Africans in essential labor market skills, thereby investing in the future of the continent.
Innovative Domestic Initiatives
On the home front, the UAE has launched significant domestic campaigns to enhance community welfare. Notable among these is the “Father’s Endowment” initiative and a partnership with the “Ne’ma” program aimed at providing one million meals from surplus food. Additionally, the AED4.7 billion Mohammed bin Rashid Endowment District stands as the first integrated endowment community in the region, illustrating a commitment to both local and global needs.
The multifaceted humanitarian efforts employed by the UAE illustrate a deep-rooted commitment to improving lives, proving that its influence extends far beyond its borders.
