UAE ranks fourth globally in nuclear facility protection in 2026 NTI Nuclear Security Index

Published:

The United Arab Emirates has achieved a notable milestone in nuclear security, ranking fourth globally in the 2026 Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) Nuclear Security Index, which evaluates the protection of nuclear facilities against sabotage. This assessment included 48 countries, with Finland, Canada, and Switzerland taking the top three spots. The UAE shares its fourth-place ranking with Australia, according to a report by ARN News Centre.

In addition to its strong performance in facility protection, the UAE ranked joint 15th among 154 countries assessed for efforts to prevent the theft of nuclear materials. The NTI index, developed in collaboration with Economist Enterprise, evaluates nations based on criteria such as physical protection, cybersecurity, security culture, international cooperation, and national preparedness.

Hamad Al Kaabi, Director-General of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR), stated that these results reflect the UAE’s ongoing commitment to enhancing its nuclear security framework. He emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant and prepared for emerging risks in an ever-evolving nuclear security environment.

Since its inception, the FANR has focused on developing and strengthening the UAE’s regulatory framework for nuclear security. This includes overseeing nuclear facilities and radioactive materials, as well as conducting inspections to ensure compliance with established standards.

The UAE has also been proactive in collaborating with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and other international partners. These efforts aim to exchange expertise, bolster national capabilities, and contribute to global nuclear security initiatives.

In its 2026 assessment, the NTI recognized the UAE as one of 12 countries leading global advancements in nuclear security. This acknowledgment highlights the UAE’s commitment to strengthening domestic measures, fostering international cooperation, and engaging with global institutions to enhance nuclear safety.

The UAE’s progress in the NTI Nuclear Security Index underscores its dedication to maintaining a robust nuclear security system, ensuring the safety of its facilities and materials while contributing to international efforts in nuclear safety and security.
