UAE Celebrates International Yoga Day: A Harmonious Gathering of Mindfulness and Community
On a luminous Saturday morning, the UAE woke up to more than just a sunrise. From the bustling arenas of Dubai to the grand halls of Abu Dhabi and the vibrant pavilions of Sharjah, the country transformed into a grand yoga studio in celebration of International Yoga Day. Thousands rolled out their mats, straightened their spines, and opened their hearts to a shared experience of mindfulness, movement, and community healing.
A Spirit of Togetherness
The essence of unity and wellness resonated throughout the venues, notably the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) and Danube Sports World in Dubai, where enthusiastic turnouts created an electric atmosphere. Among the notable attendees was former Indian tennis star Sania Mirza, who joined the Abu Dhabi celebrations alongside Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE’s Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, and Sanjay Sudhir, the Indian Ambassador to the UAE.
Abu Dhabi: A Morning of Celebration and Achievement
In Abu Dhabi, the yoga session began at 10 a.m. at ADNEC, where walls were lined with yoga mats for a synchronized group session led by instructors. This gathering was not only significant due to its size but also for the inclusive spirit that filled the air.
A standout moment occurred when Zayne Merzi Sodawaterwala, a teenager on the autism spectrum, was honored for a remarkable achievement. Zayne set a world record by completing a 10km inline skate in 40 minutes and 4 seconds. His recognition was celebrated by Sanjay Sudhir, who remarked, “We are celebrating Zayne’s achievement and yoga together. Yoga teaches us focus, balance, and discipline. His story inspires all of us.”
Visibly moved, Zayne shared, “Today is also UAE Father’s Day, and the UAE is like my home. It’s a gift for my father. My journey was never about glory; it was about a father’s prayer for his son to live joyfully and independently.” His heartfelt reflections resonated deeply with everyone present.
Sharjah: Evening of Wisdom and Community Spirit
As daylight faded, Sharjah stepped into the spotlight, hosting another mass yoga gathering at the Expo Centre. This family-friendly event attracted hundreds, including schoolchildren eager to experience the ancient practice.
Taking place in the evening, the gathering served as more than just a visual delight; it acted as a communal classroom. Instructors demonstrated accessible postures while healthcare professionals discussed yoga’s myriad benefits, emphasizing its capacity to promote well-being when practiced regularly.
Participant Meenakshi Raman, who attended with her 12-year-old daughter, said, “We do yoga at home every morning, but today felt really special. Practicing in a large group like this gives you more energy. You connect with others who share the same passion for wellness, and you learn new techniques.”
Dubai: A Soulful Retreat Amidst Urban Hustle
In the heart of Dubai, where life often feels fast-paced and frenetic, the yoga celebration took on a reflective tone. The Danube Sports World, in collaboration with the Dubai Sports Council, hosted an indoor yoga event that welcomed over 300 participants—from seasoned yogis to families and curious first-timers.
The evening emphasized deep breathing and relaxation techniques, offering a serene pause from the rush of daily life. Anis Sajan, Vice Chairman of Danube Group and a regular yoga enthusiast, found the session transformative. “In our fast-paced lives, we forget to pause. Yoga teaches us to breathe right, and that one habit can change your life,” he explained.
He further added, “Yoga is more than movement. It is reflection, grounding, and a path to healing. With so much happening around us globally, it is essential that we pause, reflect, and come together as a community.”
Also present was Ahmad Ibrahim Busherin, head of sponsorship and partnership at the Dubai Sports Council, who underscored the council’s commitment to promoting active, healthy lifestyles across the UAE. “This event reflects our dedication to support initiatives that inspire physical and mental well-being,” he stated.
A Collective Experience of Purpose
International Yoga Day 2024 was not merely observed in the UAE; it was embraced, embodied, and elevated to a collective expression of purpose. The spirit of community echoed across various venues, reminding everyone that yoga was about presence rather than mere performance. In all corners of the UAE, this heartfelt celebration fostered a sense of connection, mindfulness, and healing, embodying the true essence of yoga.
