Ras Al Khaimah Accelerates Sustainability with Integrated Strategy 2050 Under Sheikh Saud’s Patronage
Dubai, UAE – Ras Al Khaimah is advancing its sustainable development initiatives through the Ras Al Khaimah Integrated Sustainability (RIS) Strategy 2050. This comprehensive roadmap aims to bolster economic resilience, safeguard the environment, and secure long-term energy and water resources across the emirate.
Overview of the RIS Strategy
Launched under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, UAE Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, the RIS Strategy builds upon the foundations laid by the Energy Efficiency and Renewables Strategy 2040 (EE&R Strategy). While the previous strategy focused primarily on energy transition, the RIS Strategy broadens its scope to encompass critical sustainability areas such as emissions reduction, climate adaptation, air quality, and biodiversity conservation.
Andrea Di Gregorio, Executive Director of Reem, Ras Al Khaimah Municipality, emphasized that the RIS Strategy 2050 embodies Ras Al Khaimah’s commitment to harmonizing economic growth with environmental stewardship. The strategy aims to ensure a reliable and cost-effective supply of energy and water, enhance environmental protection, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, preparing the emirate for a low-carbon economy. This multifaceted approach is designed to create significant opportunities for both residents and businesses.
Economic and Environmental Implications
The RIS Strategy is projected to yield substantial economic, social, and environmental benefits. These include a positive impact on GDP, a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions, lower energy and water costs, and job creation in green industries. The strategy reinforces the energy efficiency initiatives from the EE&R Strategy, with targeted interventions planned for key sectors such as industry, government, and transportation. It also promotes a shift towards cleaner fuels and utilities, aligning with the UAE’s goal of achieving 50% clean energy by 2050 and supporting national net-zero emission commitments.
In addition to emission reductions, the RIS Strategy aims to improve air, soil, and water quality, protect terrestrial and marine ecosystems, and enhance biodiversity through conservation efforts and the use of native plant species. This holistic approach is expected to improve living and working conditions while positioning Ras Al Khaimah as an attractive destination for sustainable tourism and investment.
Strategic Programmes and Governance
The RIS Strategy encompasses 13 key programmes, including enhancements in gas supply, renewable energy deployment, air quality management, soil and land preservation, freshwater resource management, and sustainable community development. These programmes are designed to address the diverse sustainability challenges faced by the emirate.
A robust governance framework supports the implementation of the strategy, with oversight from the RAK Sustainability Committee, established under Amiri Decree No. 8 of 2025. This committee includes key stakeholders such as RAK Municipality, RAK Transport Authority, RAKGAS, and the Environment Protection and Development Authority. Reem, the Sustainable Energy Sector of Ras Al Khaimah Municipality, is tasked with providing advisory and implementation support for the strategy.
Future Prospects and Reporting
As Ras Al Khaimah experiences unprecedented growth in industry, tourism, and urban development, the RIS Strategy presents a unique opportunity to integrate sustainability into new infrastructure, communities, and buildings. This approach is expected to enhance the emirate’s appeal to investors, businesses, and residents alike.
The 2025 edition of the Ras Al Khaimah Annual Report will offer a detailed overview of the emirate’s sustainability progress and strategic direction. Insights and outcomes from this initiative are anticipated to be discussed during the third edition of the RAK Energy Summit, scheduled for November 25-27, 2026.
