Teqball made its debut at the Asian Games in Nagoya, awarding its first gold medals as Thai athletes dominated the competition, securing three of the five titles available. This milestone for the sport, which combines elements of soccer and table tennis, has been reported by Gulf Times.
Held at the Higashi Sports Centre, the event showcased the skills of the athletes, despite the venue’s modest capacity. The atmosphere was lively as spectators witnessed the unique gameplay on teqball’s signature curved tables.
Laszlo Vajda, the general secretary of the International Teqball Federation (ITF), expressed optimism about the sport’s future, highlighting its potential for Olympic inclusion. He stated that the successful debut at the Asian Games could lead the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to recognize teqball’s relevance and appeal, particularly among younger audiences.
Teqball’s Origins and Growth
Teqball originated from a training exercise in Hungary during the mid-20th century, evolving from a game known as “foot-tennis.” The modern version was developed over a decade ago by two Hungarian friends who combined soccer and table tennis elements. The ITF was established in 2017 and has since organized several world championships.
While teqball may seem unconventional, it fits well within the Asian Games, which features a variety of unique sports, including virtual taekwondo and esports. The sport is gaining traction in Asia, with notable endorsements from former soccer stars like Carles Puyol, who has been actively promoting teqball through social media and public engagements.
Thai Dominance and Regional Participation
Thailand’s success in teqball reflects its strong sporting culture, particularly in sports like sepak takraw. The Asian Games results were diverse, with medallists from various countries, including South Korea and Iraq, showcasing the sport’s growing appeal across the continent.
As teqball continues to develop, it has attracted attention from top football clubs, including Manchester United and Barcelona, which have incorporated teqball tables into their training regimens. Puyol noted that the sport enhances players’ technical skills and serves as an effective warm-up exercise.
With its Olympic aspirations and increasing popularity, teqball is poised for further growth, particularly in Asia, where its unique format resonates with fans and athletes alike.
