Teenager Dies in London Police Chase After Being Jailed in Dubai

Date:

A British teenager, Marcus Fakana, who was recently released from a Dubai prison, tragically died in a car crash in Tottenham, north London, just three months after his release. The 19-year-old was a passenger in a vehicle involved in a severe collision during the early hours of a Friday morning.

Marcus Fakana had been jailed in Dubai over a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl. At the time of the relationship, Marcus was 18 years old. His case gained significant attention after he was sentenced to one year in prison. In July, he received a royal pardon from Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, leading to his early release.

The fatal incident occurred when the Metropolitan Police attempted to stop a car in Tottenham. After a brief 60-second chase, officers lost track of the vehicle, which was subsequently found crashed into a truck. Marcus sustained serious injuries in the crash and was taken to hospital, where he later died.

Marwaan Mohamed Huseen, a 19-year-old from Argyle Road, Tottenham, has been charged in relation to the crash. The charges against him include causing death by dangerous driving, driving without insurance, driving without a license, and failing to stop. Huseen is due to appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court in connection with the incident.

Marcus Fakana’s lawyer, Radha Stirling, who is also the founder of the Detained in Dubai group, expressed sorrow over the tragedy. She shared that Marcus was grateful for the compassion shown to him by the British public during his ordeal. His time in prison had deeply affected him, instilling a renewed focus on Christianity and prayer. According to Stirling, Marcus was thankful to have regained his freedom and was hopeful about building a positive future.

The relationship that led to Marcus’s arrest came into the spotlight after the mother of the 17-year-old girl reported Marcus to the authorities upon returning to the UK, citing messages exchanged between Marcus and her daughter. Stirling noted that Marcus’s time in the Dubai prison undoubtedly caused him significant mental anguish, making his brief three-month freedom between July and October all the more poignant.

The police authorities have been transparent about their handling of the incident. The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Office for Police Conduct are both investigating the circumstances surrounding the chase and subsequent crash.

This heartbreaking story not only highlights the severe consequences of the car crash but also sheds light on the difficult legal and emotional journey Marcus Fakana endured following his case in Dubai. His untimely death has added a tragic chapter to an already distressing story.
