Tech pilgrims flock to China as innovation race accelerates, drawing global investors and executives

Published:

China is witnessing a surge in foreign interest as investors and executives flock to its cities, drawn by advancements in humanoid robotics, artificial intelligence, and electric vehicle manufacturing. This trend, described as a potential “China shock 2.0,” reflects growing concerns among Western businesses about China’s rapid technological progress, according to a report by Reuters.

Foreign visitors are now paying significant sums for exclusive access to Chinese factories, eager to observe what many believe could be the next wave of technological innovation. Robert Wu, CEO of the Shanghai-based data research firm Baiguan, noted that this interest marks a shift in perspective, with many now viewing China as a model for learning rather than merely a competitor.

Growing Demand for Tech Tours

Wu has organised tours for investors and executives, charging up to $15,000 for a five-day programme. Approximately half of the participants in these tours come from Southeast Asia, highlighting a burgeoning industry catering to foreign demand for insights into China’s innovation landscape.

While many attendees prefer to keep their visits discreet, notable participants include U.S. investment firms and tech influencers. The broader industrial tourism sector in China is thriving, reportedly generating $17.8 billion last year and projected to exceed 300 billion yuan ($44.6 billion) by 2029.

Understanding Chinese Innovation

Executives participating in these tours often seek to grasp the scale and speed of Chinese innovation firsthand. Bertrand Chen, CEO of the Global Shipping Business Network, emphasised the importance of experiencing the manufacturing process directly. Rui Ma, founder of Tech Buzz China, has organised multiple tours since 2019, framing them as essential for understanding the competitive landscape.

China’s industrial powerhouses, including Beijing, Shenzhen, and Shanghai, are at the forefront of advancements in electric vehicles, AI, and robotics. High-profile visits from global leaders, including Germany’s Chancellor, further underscore the country’s technological ascent.

Strategic Insights and Concerns

Beijing’s commitment to promoting industrial tourism is evident, with over 140 official demonstration sites established. Factories like Xiaomi’s EV plant have attracted over 250,000 visitors since early 2024, with demand so high that entry slots are being scalped online.

European executives, facing challenges in productivity and technological advancement, view China as a critical destination for insights. Alex Shengyun Lu, an AI consultant, has led numerous delegations, noting a palpable sense of urgency among attendees to learn from China’s state-backed technology investment strategies.

Shenzhen: The Epicentre of Innovation

Shenzhen exemplifies this trend, experiencing a 70% increase in foreign visitors last year. The city is transforming from a low-cost manufacturing hub to a leader in technological innovation, with local firms creating environments for foreign entrepreneurs to collaborate and innovate.

As the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum approaches, Shenzhen’s role as a showcase for Chinese innovation is set to intensify, further attracting global attention and investment.
