TCMA Accelerates Thailand’s Cement Industry Decarbonization Efforts Toward Net Zero 2050

BANGKOK, THAILAND – The Thai Cement Manufacturers Association (TCMA) has announced a pivotal achievement in the decarbonization of Thailand’s cement and concrete sector, aiming for Net Zero emissions by 2050. This initiative, which was unveiled on May 22, 2026, is a result of robust collaboration among government entities, industry stakeholders, and international partners, all working under the “Decarbonization of the Cement and Concrete Sectors in Thailand” project. The focus is on leveraging technology, innovation, and green investments to bolster competitiveness and foster sustainable economic growth.

Collaborative Efforts and Financial Backing

Dr. Chana Poomee, Honourary Chairman of TCMA and President of the ASEAN Federation of Cement Manufacturers (AFCM), emphasized that this “National Milestone” underscores the strength of both national and international partnerships. The initiative is spearheaded by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in collaboration with TCMA and key Thai government agencies, including the Department of Climate Change and Environment and the Department of Industrial Works. The project has received a financial boost of CAD 8 million from the Government of Canada through Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) to facilitate significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions within the sector.

TCMA serves as a central hub for stakeholders across the entire value chain, driving the implementation of the “Thailand 2050 Net Zero Cement and Concrete Roadmap.” This roadmap aligns with Thailand’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) 3.0 targets, aimed at enhancing industrial competitiveness, attracting green investments, and promoting sustainable economic growth.

Strategic Opportunities in Decarbonization

Dr. Chana noted that decarbonization presents not only a pressing challenge but also a strategic opportunity for enhancing national competitiveness. The progress made through this initiative encompasses policy development, innovation, technology deployment, standards, and capacity building—essential components that will facilitate the industry’s transition toward Net Zero.

A significant technological advancement introduced under this initiative is the Mobile Carbon Capture Unit (MCCU) from CETRI, Canada. This innovative technology is tailored for real-world industrial applications and is set to be piloted starting in June. The pilot will rotate among TCMA member cement plants in the SARABURI SANDBOX, aiming to validate its performance under various operational conditions and to lay the groundwork for large-scale industrial application.

Enhancing Investor Confidence

The deployment of the MCCU in Thailand exemplifies the effectiveness of international collaboration in applying advanced technologies in practical settings. This initiative accelerates experiential learning, validates technological performance, and strengthens local technical capabilities while mitigating investment risks—creating a solid foundation for future scalability.

From an investment standpoint, the development of technology-ready and standards-compliant projects is expected to bolster investor confidence, enhance the appeal of green investments, and improve access to sustainable financing. These elements are crucial for expediting the industry’s transition to Net Zero.

TCMA continues to promote a “Collaborative Mindset-Action-Value” approach, advocating for the systematic adoption of low-carbon technologies. Innovations such as Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC³) and Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) are being prioritized. These solutions not only aim to reduce emissions but also enhance efficiency, lower long-term costs, and improve global competitiveness.

Regional Collaboration and Future Goals

At the regional level, TCMA is expanding its influence through the AFCM by fostering collaboration and advancing the AFCM Decarbonization Roadmap. This roadmap serves as a collective framework aimed at reducing carbon emissions across ASEAN’s cement industry while enhancing regional technology, standards, and competitiveness.

As President of the AFCM, TCMA is dedicated to steering ASEAN toward becoming a low-carbon region. Dr. Chana highlighted that collaboration is a key mechanism for accelerating technology transfer, strengthening industry capabilities, and unlocking new economic opportunities within the region.

TCMA remains committed to enhancing collaboration and welcoming international support in technology and finance to expedite the transition to a low-carbon industry, thereby boosting Thailand’s competitiveness on the global stage.
