Taymour Grahne Projects Expands to Dubai with a Promising New Chapter
Taymour Grahne Projects, a prominent London-based contemporary art gallery, has announced an exciting venture: its first flagship location in Dubai. Recognized for its dynamic approach to showcasing contemporary talent, the gallery will celebrate this milestone with a captivating solo exhibition by American artist Gail Spaien, titled “Arranging Flowers.” This inaugural showcase is set to open on September 18th and will remain on display until November 6th, inviting art lovers to immerse themselves in Spaien’s unique artistic vision.
A Journey from New York to Dubai
Founded in New York in 2013, Taymour Grahne Projects has cultivated a distinct identity through its sharp nomadic programming. Initially establishing spaces in New York and London, the gallery has garnered attention for its ability to adapt and innovate within the ever-changing art landscape. The new Dubai space will boast a generous 2,000 square feet in Alserkal Avenue, a cultural hotspot that hosts renowned galleries like Leila Heller Gallery and The Third Line.
A Personal Connection to the Region
Taymour Grahne, the gallery’s London-born, Lebanese Finnish dealer, expressed a heartfelt connection to Dubai, considering the opening a sort of “homecoming.” His extensive travels and strong ties to the region shape his perspective as an art dealer. Grahne stated, “The city’s rapidly expanding cultural landscape and growing community of collectors make it the ideal location for this next chapter of the gallery’s journey.” This sentiment reflects a broader trend in the art world, where the Middle East is increasingly recognized as a hub for contemporary art.
Commitment to MENA Artists
Taymour Grahne Projects has established a commendable reputation for its commitment to showcasing artists from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and its diaspora. Over the years, Grahne has built long-lasting relationships with influential artists, breaking new ground in the representation of MENA talent in the global art scene. The gallery was among the first to exhibit works by figures such as Emirati artist Mohammed Kazem and the late Tarek Al-Ghoussein. Today, its roster includes acclaimed talents like Lebanese American artist Daniele Genadry, Kuwaiti artist Ala Younis, and French Algerian artist Katia Kameli, all contributing to the rich tapestry of contemporary art.
Dubai’s Flourishing Art Scene
The vibrancy of Dubai’s art scene has been notably fueled by its rising population, which welcomed over 180,000 new residents in 2022 alone. This surge has attracted numerous international dealers who are eager to tap into the region’s burgeoning cultural landscape. Among the recent newcomers is Efiɛ Gallery, established by the Mintah family, which has recently expanded within Alserkal Avenue. In proximity, NIKA Project Space was founded by collector Veronika Berezina in 2023, further diversifying the area’s art offerings. Additionally, JD Malat Gallery, a London-based institution, is set to open its new 1,700-square-foot space in Dubai’s Opera District in January 2025.
A Hub for Contemporary Art
Basmah El-Bittar, director of Alserkal Avenue, anticipates the fresh energy that Taymour Grahne Projects will bring to the cultural hub. She stated, “It is a sign of the city’s fast-growing art scene, and we can’t wait to see the fresh energy and critical conversations Taymour will bring.” The gallery’s presence is expected to enrich Alserkal Avenue’s reputation as a leading destination for cutting-edge contemporary art, fostering a space where international and regional artists can converge and collaborate.
With the opening of Taymour Grahne Projects, Dubai is poised to further solidify its position as a vital player in the global art landscape, encouraging innovative dialogues and artistic explorations that reflect both regional and global narratives.
