Specialized Launches Ultra-Light, Premium S-Works Shoes for Remco Evenepoel at the Tour de France

Introducing the S-Works Torch Remco Shoes

Specialized has recently unveiled their latest innovation in cycling footwear, the S-Works Torch Remco shoes. With a retail price set at $699 / £549, these top-tier road shoes claim the title of the lightest shoes in the peloton, weighing in at just 148.2 grams per shoe for the EU size 41.5 — a tribute to the shoe’s namesake, cycling sensation Remco Evenepoel.

A Design Born from Demand

According to Specialized, the Torch Remco shoes were developed in direct response to Evenepoel’s request for a lightweight companion for long climbs. The young Belgian, who has showcased his prowess in numerous high-stakes races, communicated directly with the design team via WhatsApp to relay his feedback during the shoe’s prototype phase. Evenepoel’s focus on weight savings highlights the crucial role that footwear plays in the performance of elite cyclists.

Specifications and Features

The Torch Remco shoes boast several cutting-edge features aimed at enhancing performance:

  1. Weight Reduction: The shoes are significantly lighter, saving 65.1 grams compared to their predecessor, the S-Works Torch.

  2. Closure System: They utilize a single Boa Li2 dial complemented by a Velcro strap for a secure and customizable fit.

  3. Construction: A simple mesh upper design aids in breathability, while a nylon-injected heel counter and toe cap contribute to the shoe’s durability.

  4. Stiffness and Comfort: Specialized has incorporated a smaller carbon fiber plate in the sole, achieving the "just the right amount" of stiffness after rigorous research. While they don’t disclose precise stiffness stats, their press material suggests that even cyclists with a lower Functional Threshold Power (FTP) than Evenepoel can confidently wear the shoes without concern.

  5. Body Geometry Foot Last: Featuring a new design with a wider toe box, this aspect of the shoe claims to reduce forefoot pressure by 44% while optimizing both stiffness and overall foot hold.

Visual Appeal and Unique Detailing

In terms of aesthetics, the Torch Remco shoes are striking with a single color option available: White/Phantom Orange. Interestingly, the orange strap was a spontaneous choice; it was the only available material during prototyping, which Specialized decided to retain as a nod to the design journey.

Adaptation for Competitive Performance

Evenepoel’s shoe journey has been quite dynamic over the years, showcasing a willingness to adapt based on performance feedback. Previously, he had won world titles wearing the original S-Works Ares shoes and has switched among various models to find the best fit for specific races and terrain. This adaptability underscores the evolving nature of professional cycling footwear — something that may provide cyclists of all levels with insights into the gear we choose.

Targeted Innovation

Ashley Sult, the Footwear Development Manager at Specialized, highlighted the specificity of Evenepoel’s request when they first discussed the development of the Torch Remco. He envisioned the shoe as a "tool" for tackling the long, sustained climbs seen in major races like the Tour de France, emphasizing that an ultra-light shoe could potentially enable riders to carry additional water — a surprising but telling reflection of the high-stakes world of competitive cycling.

The Race Ahead

As the cycling community looks forward to the Tour de France, anticipation grows regarding whether Evenepoel’s new Torch Remco shoes will translated into a tangible advantage against renowned rivals like Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard. Whether it’s the weight savings, the innovative design, or the unique collaboration between athlete and brand, the impact of the Torch Remco will be an exciting aspect to watch throughout the upcoming mountain stages.
