Former Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan has expressed his dismay over the recent violence in Uttam Nagar, Delhi, which erupted following a seemingly innocuous incident during Holi celebrations. The unrest was triggered when a child threw a water balloon, splashing a woman in the street. Dhawan took to social media to voice his concerns, stating, “Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Tarun Kumar in Uttam Nagar. It’s heartbreaking that something as small as a child throwing a water balloon during Holi could escalate into such violence. Humanity should never fall to this level. What Happened in Uttam Nagar?
On March 5, a day after the Holi festivities, a 26-year-old man named Tarun Kumar was killed in a violent clash between two families in the JJ Colony area of southwest Uttam Nagar. The incident has led to heightened tensions in the locality, with local residents protesting outside the police station, demanding immediate action against those responsible. A large crowd also gathered outside the residence of the accused, leading to police intervention to prevent further escalation.
What Triggered The Violence
Preliminary investigations indicate that the conflict began due to a stray splash from a water balloon. Family members of the deceased recounted that an 11-year-old girl, playing Holi on her terrace, threw a water balloon that landed on the road, splashing a woman from another family. According to Tarun’s grandfather, Maan Singh, the woman reacted aggressively, leading to a confrontation that escalated into violence. Singh claimed that even after the initial conflict seemed to subside, members of the other family later attacked Tarun as he was returning home from the celebrations.
Singh alleged that Tarun was brutally assaulted, stating, “When he was lying on the road, a big stone was thrown on his chest.” Tarun’s uncle, Ramesh, emphasized that Tarun was unaware of the earlier clash and was attacked upon entering the street. He described how a group of eight to ten individuals assaulted Tarun with sticks and stones, resulting in severe injuries that led to his death during treatment.
Family members have called for justice, demanding the arrest of all individuals involved in the incident. They have urged the police to review CCTV footage to identify the culprits. One family member expressed their determination for justice, stating, “We want justice. Those who attacked us were so enraged that they could have even thrashed the little girl.”
