Celebrating Iraqi Heritage in Dubai: A Vibrant Cultural Showcase

A Grand Gathering

In a remarkable demonstration of cultural appreciation and community spirit, Dubai played host to a significant celebration of Iraqi cultural heritage at Expo City Dubai. The event drew an impressive crowd of over 15,000, predominantly from the Iraqi community, highlighting the city’s role as a melting pot of various cultures. Alongside the diplomatic presence of Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE’s Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, and Dr. Muzafar Mustafa Al Jabouri, Iraq’s Ambassador to the UAE, the gathering signified the profound connections between the two nations.

Hosted by the vibrant social platform Emirates Loves Iraq, the celebration unfolded at the Dubai Exhibition Centre, providing an opportunity for participants to engage with the rich tapestry of Iraqi history, arts, and traditions. The event emphasized not only Iraq’s cultural legacy but also the longstanding historical and cultural ties that bind the UAE and Iraq, fostering a spirit of coexistence and fraternity.

Cultural Significance

Delivering a heartfelt keynote address, Sheikh Nahyan highlighted Iraq’s monumental contributions to global civilization. He underscored the commitment of the UAE’s leadership, spearheaded by President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, to support Iraq’s aspirations towards growth and development.

Sheikh Nahyan articulated that culture and heritage are fundamental pillars of national identity, integral to promoting unity within the region. The belief in showcasing collaborative narratives was prominent in his address. He urged the Iraqi community in the UAE to share their stories through the “Our Life in the UAE” writing competition, which aims to celebrate community experiences as part of the Year of the Community initiative.

Honoring Excellence in the Community

A significant aspect of the evening was the recognition of outstanding Iraqi individuals who have made significant contributions across various fields, such as education, literature, engineering, and the arts. Among the distinguished honorees were renowned figures like Dr. Ahmed Al-Kubaisi, Dr. Muthanna Abdul Razzaq Al Jabouri, and the late poet Kareem Al-Iraqi, with his daughter accepting the award on his behalf.

This recognition not only honored individual achievements but also reinforced the importance of collaborative impacts on the societal fabric of both nations, celebrating the diverse contributions of the Iraqi community to the UAE’s progress.

A Kaleidoscope of Cultural Experiences

The event was a lively celebration filled with cultural performances, showcasing Iraq’s vibrant traditions through traditional music and folk dances. Art exhibitions further provided a visual feast for attendees, while a dedicated culinary space introduced visitors to the rich flavors of Iraqi cuisine. Designed as a family-friendly festival, Expo City Dubai’s facilities ensured that everyone could access and enjoy the festivities in a welcoming atmosphere.

This celebration was a testament to the shared cultural ethos and community spirit prevalent in the UAE, making it a fitting backdrop for such an impactful gathering.

Deepening UAE-Iraq Ties

The UAE and Iraq maintain a longstanding relationship characterized by shared cultural, linguistic, and historical ties. In recent years, this bond has extended beyond heritage into economic partnerships and investments. The UAE has emerged as one of Iraq’s principal trading partners, highlighted by initiatives like the UAE-Iraq Business Forum held in Dubai. This forum witnessed the participation of over 170 companies and facilitated more than 250 strategic meetings across diverse sectors.

According to recent data, non-oil exports from the UAE to Iraq saw a staggering 41% increase in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. This significant growth marks Iraq as a top destination for UAE exports, illustrating the burgeoning economic collaboration between the two nations.

The commitment to strengthening these ties through cultural celebrations not only fortifies bilateral relations but also underscores a shared vision for a prosperous future, bolstered by the contributions of both the Iraqi community in the UAE and the UAE’s proactive engagement in fostering regional cooperation.
