Strengthening Ties: FIA President’s Official Visit to Japan

Dubai – A recent official visit by FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem to Japan has underscored the importance of collaboration between the FIA and one of motorsport’s most influential nations. This trip highlights Japan’s remarkable advancements in mobility innovation and the vital role it plays in the global motorsport landscape.

Hosted by the Japan Automobile Federation

The visit, facilitated by the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF) and its President, Masayoshi Sakaguchi, was marked by discussions about Japan’s significant investment in smart infrastructure. Japan is not only a leader in technology but also a pioneer in reimagining urban areas as dynamic spaces for both mobility and sporting events. This progressive approach resonates deeply with the FIA’s goals of promoting safety and sustainability within the automotive and motorsport sectors.

High-Level Meetings

To solidify this partnership, Ben Sulayem engaged in dialogues with several key leaders, including Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Commissioner of the Japan Sports Agency Koji Murofushi, and Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Hiromasa Nakano. These discussions focused on shared challenges and future opportunities, tackling issues ranging from cleaner technologies and enhanced road safety to expanding access to motorsport.

A Milestone for the FIA

“This visit marks a significant milestone for the FIA as we deepen our relationship with Japan,” stated Ben Sulayem. He added that it was an honor to meet influential leaders and observe the energy propelling advancements across Japan’s motorsport and mobility sectors.

The emphasis on integrated approaches to mobility and sport was prevalent, illustrating how Japan effectively addresses societal needs through transformative policies and world-class sporting events. Indeed, the country hosts four FIA World Championship events, making it a key player in the international motorsport arena.

The Role of JAF

Masayoshi Sakaguchi, JAF President, expressed pride in welcoming Ben Sulayem, emphasizing the federation’s dual role as a leader in both sport and mobility. “With over 20 million members, our collaboration is essential to driving innovation and safety,” he said. Sakaguchi’s words reflect a shared vision for a sustainable future in both motorsport and mobility.

Japan’s Motorsport Growth

The visit highlighted Japan’s growing motorsport culture, as JAF now boasts over 200,000 licensed racing drivers—a significant 20 percent increase over the past five years. The anticipation surrounding the upcoming 2025 Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix is palpable, with tickets selling out quickly after achieving the highest attendance since 2006. This momentum is indicative of the nation’s commitment to fostering a vibrant motorsport community.

Akio Toyoda’s Role

Another noteworthy aspect of the visit was the acknowledgment of Akio Toyoda, chairman of Toyota, as an active member of the FIA Senate. His involvement symbolizes the strong ties between Japan’s automotive industry and the FIA, further enhancing collaboration in innovation and safety.

The Future of Mobility

As the visit came to a close, discussions about preparing for urban mobility’s future were at the forefront. The FIA’s commitment to sustainable practices in mobility and motorsport is more relevant than ever, and Japan’s initiatives serve as a model for other nations.

Ben Sulayem’s visit ends as he heads to Macau for the 2025 FIA Extraordinary General Assembly and Annual Conference, where over 500 senior FIA delegates from 149 countries will gather to discuss the future of mobility and motorsport. This underscores the global network fostered by the FIA and its mission to promote shared knowledge and innovation across borders.
