Saudi Arabia joins global leaders at Kyoto summit to discuss AI’s impact on science

Published:

Saudi Arabia has joined global leaders at the Global Summit of Research Institute Leaders in Kyoto, Japan, to discuss the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) in scientific research. The summit, held alongside the Science and Technology in Society (STS) Forum, gathered representatives from 33 research institutions worldwide, emphasizing the Kingdom’s commitment to advancing its presence in international scientific discussions.

Dr. Munir Eldesouki, President of King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) and Acting Governor of the Research Development and Innovation Authority, represented Saudi Arabia at the summit. His participation underscores the Kingdom’s strategic focus on innovation and emerging technologies, aiming to enhance its role in shaping the future of research.

AI Integrity and Openness at the Forefront

The summit’s theme, “AI Integrity and Openness,” highlighted the dual opportunities and challenges presented by AI in accelerating scientific discovery. Discussions centered on the reliability of knowledge, access to advanced computing resources, and the need for data sovereignty. Research leaders stressed the importance of developing scientific ecosystems that leverage AI’s capabilities while upholding research integrity and openness.

Participants called for equitable access to advanced scientific tools and infrastructure, recognizing that as computing power and data become increasingly vital to research, disparities must be addressed to foster innovation.

Balancing Data Sovereignty and Openness

A joint statement from the participating institutions emphasized the necessity of balancing data sovereignty with the openness of AI models. The leaders advocated for enhanced international cooperation to broaden access to advanced research infrastructure, aiming to reduce disparities among institutions and scientific communities.

The statement also highlighted the importance of establishing principles that promote integrity, openness, and trust in AI applications as they become integral to the scientific research process.

Human-Centric Approach to Scientific Discovery

Addressing the evolving landscape of scientific discovery in the AI era, the leaders underscored the need for fair recognition of researchers’ intellectual contributions. They emphasized that AI should enhance, rather than replace, human curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity in research.

Furthermore, the summit called for deeper collaboration among global research institutions to guide the responsible development and application of AI technologies that benefit society. Saudi Arabia’s involvement in this summit reflects its growing role in the global research and innovation ecosystem, reinforcing its engagement with leading international research entities.

As the Kingdom seeks to expand its contributions to discussions on the future of science and technology, it aims to strengthen partnerships that foster a more open, trusted, and future-ready scientific landscape.

According to Economy Middle East, this summit marks a significant step for Saudi Arabia in its quest to shape the future of AI in scientific research.
