Ras Al Khaimah Set to Launch First Air Taxi Vertiport by 2027

Ras Al Khaimah is gearing up to introduce its inaugural air taxi vertiport in the first quarter of 2027. This development coincides with the anticipated opening of Wynn Resorts’ Al Marjan Island integrated resort. According to Duncan Walker, CEO of Skyports, this initiative represents an ideal opportunity to establish the UAE’s first inter-emirate aerial mobility corridor.

Construction Timeline and Operational Plans

In a recent conversation with Arabian Business, Walker revealed that construction for the vertiport is slated to commence in 2026. The operational timeline is closely linked to the launch of the Wynn casino, with plans to be fully operational by early 2027. “We’ll be ready for Q1 2027, aligning perfectly with the opening of the Wynn resort,” he stated. The prospect of traveling from Dubai International Airport to Al Marjan Island in just 15 minutes presents an exciting opportunity for both residents and tourists.

Future Developments: Jebel Jais Vertiport

In addition to the Al Marjan Island vertiport, a second location is planned at Jebel Jais, the highest mountain in the UAE and a popular destination for adventure tourism. Walker emphasized the rapid growth of Ras Al Khaimah, noting that it is more efficient to build infrastructure in developing areas rather than retrofitting existing structures.

Collaborative Efforts for Air Taxi Services

This project builds on a recent agreement between the Ras Al Khaimah Transport Authority (RAKTA), Joby Aviation, and Skyports. This partnership aims to establish the Gulf’s first passenger air taxi service network by 2027, as part of Ras Al Khaimah’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan 2030. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance transportation options in the region.

Expanding the Dubai Network

Dubai is also making strides in aerial mobility. Walker confirmed that two vertiports are currently under construction at Dubai International Airport and Dubai Marina, with plans for them to be operational by the end of Q1 2026. Additionally, two more vertiports are planned for Palm Jumeirah and Dubai Mall later that same year. “By the end of 2026, we’ll have four vertiports in Dubai, starting with DXB and Marina in the first quarter,” he explained. These corridors aim to alleviate congestion in key tourism and business areas, particularly in high-demand locations like Palm Jumeirah.

Future Prospects Across the Emirates

Skyports’ ambitions extend beyond Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah. Walker mentioned a signed agreement with Ajman and noted growing interest in Abu Dhabi, particularly following recent test flights by Archer Aviation. “The entire Emirates has shown significant interest,” he remarked. “These services are most effective when there are numerous nodes in the network, making it convenient for customers.”

Walker also highlighted the potential for cross-border services with Oman, suggesting that the airspace between Oman and Ras Al Khaimah could serve as a testing ground for regional mobility integration. “The UAE offers a unique environment where leadership is decisive, stakeholders are aligned, and projects are realized efficiently,” he noted. “In other countries, bureaucratic hurdles can slow progress, but here, construction sites operate around the clock.”

Global Operations and Future of Air Taxis

Skyports operates on a global scale, focusing on the design, construction, and operation of vertiports in collaboration with eVTOL manufacturers like Joby Aviation, which aims to launch its first passenger flights in the UAE by 2026. Archer Aviation has also conducted test flights in Abu Dhabi, further indicating the momentum behind aerial mobility in the region.

“The demand generated by Wynn, combined with existing tourism, creates a compelling case for air taxis,” Walker stated. The journey from Dubai International to Al Marjan Island, which typically takes 90 minutes or more by car, is expected to be reduced to just 15 minutes by air taxi.

Walker concluded by asserting that the Middle East is transitioning from cautious trials to confident scaling in aerial mobility. “Q1 2027 will mark the beginning of this transformation,” he said, signaling an exciting future for air travel in the region.
