Rahm Boosts LIV Golfers with Jet from Dubai to Hong Kong Amid U.S.-Iran Tensions
LIV Golf players faced significant travel challenges as they prepared for the third event of their season in Hong Kong this week, primarily due to escalating conflict in Iran. Many players, based in Dubai, struggled to secure flights as tensions surged following recent military actions by U.S. and Israeli forces, prompting evacuation advisories for individuals in 14 Middle Eastern nations.
The travel complications left eight players scrambling to find a way to arrive in Hong Kong in time for the tournament’s commencement on Thursday. Among those affected were prominent golfers including Thomas Detry, Lee Westwood, Anirban Lahiri, Sam Horsfield, Tom McKibbin, Adrian Meronk, and Caleb Surratt, along with one caddie.
In a bid to facilitate their timely arrival, LIV Golf star Jon Rahm arranged a private jet out of Oman. The players were required to undertake an arduous journey, which involved traveling by ground transport from Dubai to the Oman border late at night. Upon reaching the border, the group switched to a shuttle that took them to a nearby airstrip, where Rahm’s jet was poised for takeoff shortly after midnight local time.
The private jet successfully transported the golfers to Hong Kong, with their arrival time marked at 11:22 a.m. local time on Wednesday, just over 24 hours ahead of the tournament’s kickoff at Hong Kong Golf Club.
This series of events underscores the logistic complexities that professional athletes can encounter amid geopolitical strife, emphasizing the ongoing impact of international relations on sporting events.
As nations navigate diplomatic tensions, stakeholders in sports, including governing bodies and promotional organizations, continue to monitor travel safety for participants. Travel security remains a priority as the sports calendar evolves in a climate marked by uncertainty.
