Kalisto Pasuwa Takes the Helm as Malawi’s New National Football Coach

LILONGWE – In a significant development for Malawian football, Kalisto Pasuwa has officially been appointed as the head coach of the Malawi men’s national football team, The Flames. The announcement was made by the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) on Wednesday, marking the beginning of a new chapter for both the coach and the team. Pasuwa, who previously held the position on an interim basis since November, has now secured a two-year contract that aims to elevate Malawi’s standing in international football.

A Journey to the Top

Kalisto Pasuwa, a seasoned coach at 54 years old, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. His coaching career includes a successful stint at Nyasa Big Bullets, where he led the team to an impressive four consecutive league titles before departing in December 2024. His recent performances with the national team, including a notable victory against Burkina Faso and a commendable draw away to Burundi during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, positioned him as the frontrunner for the national team role.

Pasuwa’s appointment was not without its challenges. Initially, the Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) raised concerns about the recruitment process, claiming it had not adhered to proper procedures. However, following intervention from the Ministry of Sports, the path was cleared for Pasuwa to officially take the reins.

The Vision Ahead

With his appointment now confirmed, Pasuwa’s immediate focus will be on assembling a competitive squad for the upcoming CHAN (African Nations Championship) qualifiers. FAM President Fleetwood Haiya expressed confidence in Pasuwa’s capabilities, stating that the association believes he has the potential to make Malawi a formidable force in international football.

“Pasuwa has achieved a lot both locally and internationally, and it cannot be disputed that he has been one of the best performers in our football,” Haiya remarked. He emphasized that the decision to appoint Pasuwa was based on thorough consultations and recommendations from various stakeholders, underscoring the trust placed in the new coach.

Setting Ambitious Goals

Pasuwa’s primary objective is clear: to guide Malawi to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Additionally, he faces the challenge of navigating the remaining six matches in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, with a target of securing at least three victories. These goals reflect a broader ambition to rebuild The Flames and restore their competitive edge on the continental stage.

“I’m filled with a sense of pride, passion, and responsibility,” Pasuwa stated during his unveiling. He expressed his commitment to collaborating with all stakeholders to ensure that the team embodies national dignity and pride. His familiarity with Malawian football culture and player needs, gained from years of experience in the region, positions him advantageously for this role.

A Collaborative Approach

Pasuwa’s approach emphasizes teamwork and collaboration. He recognizes the importance of working closely with players, staff, and the broader football community to achieve common goals. Drawing from his previous experience with the Zimbabwe national team, where he successfully led them to qualify for AFCON in 2017, Pasuwa is optimistic about replicating that success with Malawi.

“I know what Malawian players need, and that gives me an advantage,” he noted, highlighting his understanding of the local football landscape. His commitment to fostering a strong team spirit and unity will be crucial as he embarks on this journey.

Looking Forward

As Pasuwa prepares to name his backroom staff in the coming days, the excitement surrounding his appointment is palpable. Fans and stakeholders alike are eager to see how his leadership will shape the future of Malawian football. With a clear vision and a strong sense of purpose, Kalisto Pasuwa is poised to make a significant impact on The Flames and their quest for success on the international stage.
