Padel: The Sport Reshaping Social Connections and Generational Trends

Padel — a sport

“Being an ardent tennis fan for decades, I was among the staunch disbelievers in padel… I have even mocked my friends who started playing padel, saying, ‘you’ve left the pure sport and moved to the dark side’… until I played it myself and absolutely loved it! Now I hardly get to play tennis, and I’m not regretting it one bit!” This candid confession from Zafar, a former tennis devotee residing in Dubai, reflects a growing trend: the city’s rapid embrace of padel, transitioning from a niche pastime to a bustling mainstream sport.

A Global Revolution in Sports

Across the globe, a subtle revolution is underway, fundamentally altering the way younger generations engage in sports. Gen Z, spanning from the mid-90s to early 2010s, is gravitating towards activities that not only offer physical thrills but also foster social connections and have a visually appealing aspect. These are not mere games; they are lifestyle choices.

In a five-part series exploring the rise of “Gen Z Sports,” we delve into fast-paced, easily accessible, and Instagram-worthy activities. From the buzzing padel courts in Dubai to bouldering gyms in Berlin, and pickleball parks in Bengaluru, we illuminate the trends, technologies, and communities redefining sports in the 21st century.

The Expansive Padel Landscape in Dubai

Dubai’s padel scene has seen explosive growth. Once home to a mere few courts, the city now boasts over 400, showcasing the sport’s soaring popularity among both residents and tourists. This uptick in padel is mirrored across the UAE, which, alongside Saudi Arabia, leads Asia in the number of padel facilities.

Brent Van der Ven, owner of the AUD social padel facility, emphasizes the sport’s community aspect: “Like many team sports, it connects people over a shared interest. It’s easy to learn, making it a highly social activity where new friendships flourish. The steep learning curve keeps players engaged, as each game feels fresh and provides opportunities for personal growth.”

Accessibility and Social Engagement

Padel’s charm lies in its approachability compared to traditional sports. Unlike tennis, which often demands extensive training, padel is accessible for players of all skill levels. The sport’s doubles format fosters camaraderie, encouraging teamwork and dynamic, fast-paced play on enclosed courts.

The burgeoning number of padel clubs in Dubai has incited increased competition, with venues offering various memberships and amenities aimed at drawing in players. For instance, Central Padel Dubai provides members with priority booking, dedicated time slots, and access to exclusive events and coaching programs.

Similarly, Viya Padel offers broad membership options that include court bookings, dining discounts, and coaching rates. These initiatives highlight a trend where padel clubs are evolving into lifestyle hubs, seamlessly blending sport, social interaction, and wellness. From the trendy Matcha Club, known for its minimalist design and wellness offerings, to the unique PadelX Floating Court, which places fun on water, Dubai’s padel venues are transforming recreational experiences.

The Influencer Effect and Community Engagement

John David, manager at Padel Pro, a chain of successful padel courts in Dubai, encapsulates the sport’s appeal: “Padel perfectly fuses fitness, fun, and social interaction, aligning seamlessly with Dubai’s active, community-focused lifestyle. Its accessibility and visually striking courts, coupled with a notable presence of influencers and celebrities, make this sport feel modern and aspirational. The year-round favorable climate, enhanced by indoor facilities, accelerates its growth.”

The influence of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, has also been pivotal in popularizing padel within the emirate. His public engagement with the sport, including launching Ramadan-themed tournaments, has sparked significant interest among locals. This royal endorsement prompted the establishment of the UAE Padel Association in 2019, cementing the sport’s position as a staple in Dubai, second only to football in popularity.

Padel’s Emerging Presence in India

While padel thrives in Dubai, its presence in India is still in its infancy. Currently, the sport is akin to Zumba a decade ago; popular among elite circles but yet to achieve mainstream status. Limited to a handful of cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, India has fewer than 50 operational courts, with minimal visibility in educational curricula.

However, the country presents fertile ground for a padel boom. The sport requires less space than tennis, making it ideal for India’s densely populated urban areas and apartment complexes. Gen Z’s preference for quick and collaborative experiences aligns well with padel’s short matches and energetic team format. With the rise of fitness influencers and the athleisure trend, padel has the potential to become a polished, status-driven endeavor that resonates on social media.

European padel leagues have illustrated successful franchising models that could inspire India. Drawing from the legacy of the IPL, the country is keenly tuned to sports leagues and community engagement. Padel clubs in Dubai have adopted digital innovations like app-based bookings and social club features; an appealing prospect for India’s tech-savvy youth.

Infrastructure Meets Aspiration

Dubai’s experience exemplifies the incredible possibilities that arise when infrastructure, aspiration, and social culture align. For India, padel could emerge as the next dominant sport—not by overshadowing cricket or badminton, but by carving a unique niche where fitness, friendship, and flair coalesce. The moment for this transformation is ripe and waiting to be seized.
