NdB Ballet and Janáček Opera Set to Dazzle Dubai
The Brno National Theatre (NdB) is making history with its upcoming tour to Dubai, marking the largest foreign tour in the company’s history. From February 14 to 21, the NdB Ballet and Janáček Opera will grace the stage of the iconic Dubai Opera, a stunning venue shaped like a traditional Arabian sailboat, nestled between the towering Burj Khalifa and the mesmerizing Dubai Fountain.
A Grand Collaboration
The NdB Ballet will present the timeless classic ‘La Bayadère’, a ballet that has captivated audiences since its debut in 1877. This performance will feature esteemed guest artists from the Royal Opera House and the Berlin State Ballet, creating a remarkable collaboration that promises to elevate the experience for all attendees. The ballet, choreographed by Jaroslav Slavický, will take place on February 14, 15, and 16, showcasing the artistry and talent of the NdB dancers alongside international stars.
The Story of ‘La Bayadère’
Set in ancient India, ‘La Bayadère’ tells the poignant tale of love, betrayal, and redemption between the beautiful temple dancer Nikiya and the valiant warrior Solor. The ballet is renowned for its breathtaking choreography, particularly the iconic “Kingdom of the Shades” scene in Act Two, which is a highlight of the performance. The lead roles of Nikiya and Solor will be portrayed by Vadim Muntagirov and Fumi Kaneko, both celebrated dancers from the Royal Opera House. Their performances, alongside other notable dancers like Ksenia Ovsyanick and Alejandro Virelles from the Berlin State Ballet, promise to deliver an unforgettable experience.
A Vision for International Presence
Martin Glaser, the Director of NdB, emphasized the importance of this tour as part of a broader strategy to enhance the international presence of the Brno National Theatre. “Developing international activities and strengthening the position of the Brno National Theatre in the European context and beyond is one of the strategic priorities that we have set for my third term of office,” he stated. The Dubai tour is not only an opportunity to showcase Czech theatre culture but also a culmination of extensive negotiations and efforts to bring this vision to fruition.
A Musical Journey with Janáček Opera
Following the ballet performances, the NdB’s Janáček Opera will take the stage on February 18 with a concert performance of Mozart’s Requiem and Symphony No. 1. This concert will feature a talented lineup of soloists, including Pavla Vykopalová, Václava Krejčí Housková, Daniel Matoušek, and Jan Šťáva. The juxtaposition of Mozart’s early work, composed when he was just eight years old, with his final masterpiece, Requiem, offers a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of one of classical music’s greatest composers. The concert will be conducted by Robert Kružík, the incoming chief conductor of the Janáček Opera.
Exploring Tchaikovsky’s ‘Eugene Onegin’
The tour will conclude with two performances of ‘Eugene Onegin’ on February 21 and 22. This poetic production, directed by Martin Glaser and musically staged by Robert Kružík, delves into the themes of romantic illusions and the quest for true happiness. Tchaikovsky’s music beautifully complements the narrative, enhancing the emotional depth of Pushkin’s story. Aleš Jenis will take on the title role, with Linda Ballová portraying Tatyana, promising a powerful interpretation of this beloved opera.
Future Endeavors and Global Outreach
The Dubai tour is just the beginning for NdB, as Glaser revealed plans for further international engagements. The NdB Drama company is set to tour Tokyo, Osaka, and Tel Aviv, while the ballet will perform in China, Budapest, and Tampere, Finland. Additionally, the NdB Opera company will participate in festivals in Poland and Germany, and will present a new production of ‘The Marriage of Figaro’ in France. The company has also been invited to the prestigious Hong Kong Arts Festival next spring, highlighting its growing reputation on the global stage.
A Celebration of Culture
The upcoming performances in Dubai represent not only a significant milestone for the Brno National Theatre but also a celebration of cultural exchange and artistic collaboration. As the NdB Ballet and Janáček Opera prepare to enchant audiences in the UAE, they carry with them the rich heritage of Czech theatre, poised to leave a lasting impression on the international arts scene.
