The Rise of Pickleball in Nagaland: A Community-Centric Sport

Pickleball’s Growing Popularity

Nathan Kaurinta Zeliang, the President of the Nagaland Pickleball Association (NPA), has expressed unwavering confidence in pickleball’s potential to capture the hearts of people in Nagaland. Recent events have corroborated his enthusiasm, with over 30 teams participating in a PWR50 tournament, demonstrating the Naga youth’s immediate affinity for the sport. Zeliang remarked, “Pickleball is a sport that’s truly accessible to everyone; it’s affordable, easy to learn, and incredibly engaging compared to many other racquet sports.”

Building Community Through Sport

The rapid popularity of pickleball in Nagaland transcends mere numbers. Zeliang highlighted the unifying nature of the sport, stating that it has fostered not just competition but genuine connections among players. “On a personal note, this sport has allowed me to meet, connect, and build friendships with so many wonderful people,” he noted. This is more than just a game; it has cultivated a strong sense of community and belonging among participants.

The Naga Spirit of Brotherhood

With deep-rooted traditions of community living, the culture in Nagaland has proven to be a natural fit for pickleball. Zeliang emphasized how the local spirit of brotherhood extends beyond everyday life onto the playing field, encouraging players to uplift and motivate each other. “This deep sense of unity encourages our players to support one another, bringing out the best in each other both on and off the court,” he explained.

Future Endeavors: A Vision for Growth

Looking ahead, Zeliang shared ambitious plans for the sport in the region. He introduced the idea of a Centre of Excellence for Pickleball in Nagaland, intending to bolster structured training and professional coaching. This initiative aims to create a pathway for players to participate at national levels, offering them exposure and growth opportunities. “Through this initiative, our aim will be to provide structured training, professional coaching, and ample opportunities for our players,” Zeliang outlined.

Collaboration and Support

Zeliang’s vision wouldn’t be possible without the collaborative efforts of the association’s members and the pickleball community. He acknowledged their role in making the sport accessible. “Our achievements so far have been the result of a genuine team effort by the Association and the broader pickleball community,” he said. The enthusiasm generated around pickleball has encouraged participants of all ages—young enthusiasts and older individuals alike—to engage with the sport, promoting physical fitness and healthy living.

Regional and National Impact

The momentum in Nagaland is also fueled by strong partnerships with key figures in the pickleball community, including Nazneen Rahman of the Assam Pickleball Association. Zeliang believes that pickleball can act as a unifying force in fostering teamwork and pride within the community. “We want everyone to know that we will be putting our heart and soul into every match, giving our very best to bring pride and glory to our people and to the state of Nagaland,” he stated.

A Personal Journey

Zeliang’s own journey with pickleball began just a year ago, transitioning from football to this exhilarating new sport. “Honestly, there’s been no looking back since,” he reflected. His dedication to pickleball can be traced back to the guidance he received from Rahman, who played a crucial role in establishing the NPA.

The Road Ahead

The trajectory of pickleball in Nagaland is already noteworthy, and the excitement surrounding the sport is palpable. Zeliang conveyed optimism as they prepare to send two teams to the Nationals. “The energy, the excitement, and the commitment from everyone involved have been incredible, and we’re fully motivated to give our best and make Nagaland proud,” he concluded.

With ongoing support and a shared vision for growth, the future of pickleball in Nagaland looks promising, driven by a community that embodies the spirit of camaraderie and passion for sport.
