UAE’s Arab Reading Challenge: A Celebration of Knowledge and Culture
Emphasizing Knowledge as a Core Value
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, recently highlighted the United Arab Emirates’ commitment to promoting knowledge. He noted that nurturing an Arab generation enthusiastic about learning is a cornerstone of the UAE’s mission. The upcoming crowning ceremony for the winners of the ninth edition of the Arab Reading Challenge is a testament to this vision, scheduled for October 23, 2025, at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
Record Participation in the Challenge
Sheikh Mohammed announced that a remarkable 32 million students from 132,000 schools participated in this year’s edition, making it the most significant reading competition globally. He emphasized the astounding dedication of these students, who strive to read 50 books annually, showcasing their unwavering passion for knowledge. This commitment, he asserted, is vital for reclaiming and enriching civilization, while also reinforcing the Arabic language’s vital role in the nation’s identity and future.
The Impact of the Arab Reading Challenge
Mohammad Al Gergawi, Secretary-General of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI), underscored the significance of the Arab Reading Challenge, which was launched in 2015 under Sheikh Mohammed’s patronage. This initiative reflects the UAE’s commitment to enhancing educational and cultural standards across the Arab world. By encouraging students to read, explore different cultures, and embrace the Arabic language, the challenge fosters a competitive spirit and empowers students to pursue their aspirations.
Al Gergawi stated that the record number of participants signifies a strong belief in future Arab generations’ capability to absorb modern knowledge, develop skills, and contribute to crafting a knowledge-driven future. This enthusiasm can be attributed to the dedicated efforts of educational institutions across participating countries collaborating with MBRGI.
A Major Educational Initiative
This year, the Arab Reading Challenge drew participation from over 32 million students across 50 countries, supported by around 161,000 supervisors. It stands as the largest Arabic-language reading initiative in existence. The upcoming ceremony is set to honor outstanding participants, including the overall Arab Reading Challenge Champion, the People of Determination Champion, the Best School, and the Outstanding Supervisor.
Prize Distribution and Recognizing Excellence
The Arab Reading Challenge also rewards exceptional achievers. The champion will receive a cash prize of AED 500,000, with runners-up receiving AED 100,000 and AED 70,000, respectively. This year’s country-level champions include students from Morocco, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and other participating nations, reflecting the diverse regional engagement driven by this initiative.
In the People of Determination category, the 1st place winner will take home AED 200,000, while those in 2nd and 3rd place will receive AED 100,000 and AED 50,000, respectively. This acknowledgment reinforces the value placed on inclusive education.
Recognizing Schools and Educational Supervisors
The Best School title will go to the institution that most effectively engaged students in reading activities, with a focus on the successful delivery of this year’s educational qualifiers. The winning school will be awarded AED 1 million, encouraging continuous efforts to cultivate a love for reading among students.
Similarly, the Outstanding Supervisor title will acknowledge those who have significantly impacted their students’ reading initiatives. This award aims to honor efforts in fostering a reading culture, guiding students through book selections, and supporting their learning journey.
The Journey So Far
Since its inception, the Arab Reading Challenge has garnered significant participation, with over 163 million students engaged across nine editions. The challenge began with 3.6 million participants and has seen incredible growth, with this year’s participation reflecting an impressive 795% increase since the first edition.
In previous years, esteemed honors have recognized talented participants and schools dedicated to nurturing a love for reading and language. The challenge not only focuses on literacy but also aims to foster cultural understanding and cooperation among youth.
A Lasting Legacy
Launched by Sheikh Mohammed, the Arab Reading Challenge seeks to instill a deep-seated passion for reading and lifelong learning in young Arabs. The initiative promotes essential language skills, cultural appreciation, and a sense of community, striving to equip future generations with the assets they need to build a better tomorrow.
This initiative serves as a vital part of the UAE’s broader strategy to cultivate an informed and engaged society, realizing the potential of its youth while honoring their cultural heritage. Through programs like this, the UAE remains committed to nurturing a vibrant educational landscape that encourages exploration and intellectual curiosity.
