Beyoncé and Co-Chairs Unveil 2026 Met Gala Dress Code: “Fashion is Art”
The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced the dress code for the upcoming 2026 Met Gala, co-chaired by Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour. Set for May 4, the theme, “Fashion is Art,” aims to underscore the artistic nature of fashion, a sentiment echoed by Andrew Bolton, curator of the Met’s Costume Institute.
Gala Details and Host Committee
The museum revealed the dress code on Monday, alongside the names of new guests joining the co-chairs. The host committee will be led by designer Anthony Vaccarello and filmmaker Zoë Kravitz, featuring notable figures such as Sabrina Carpenter, Teyana Taylor, Lena Dunham, Misty Copeland, Angela Bassett, and Aimee Mullins. Attendees are expected to interpret the flexible dress code creatively.
Bolton remarked that the theme could potentially resolve the ongoing debate about whether fashion qualifies as art. He emphasized the significance of the gala, which serves as both a fundraiser for the Costume Institute and a launchpad for the annual spring fashion exhibition.
“Costume Art” Exhibition
This year’s exhibition, titled “Costume Art,” will showcase nearly 400 objects, including 200 garments and 200 artworks from the museum’s collection. Bolton described the exhibit as a substantial undertaking, stating, “It’s a beast,” as he guided a reporter through its early stages.
The exhibition aims to explore the concept of “the dressed body” and to illustrate that fashion is not only art but that art can also be viewed through the lens of fashion. Bolton noted that the exhibit will feature pairings of art objects and garments, such as a vase from ancient Greece displayed alongside a corresponding costume piece.
Diversity and Representation
The exhibit will also focus on diversity in body types, allowing viewers to see themselves reflected in the fashions on display. Mannequins will feature heads with polished steel surfaces, designed by artist Samar Hejazi, to create a mirror effect.
Bolton expressed a sense of pressure to deliver a remarkable exhibition, as “Costume Art” will inaugurate the new Conde M. Nast Galleries, which will occupy nearly 12,000 square feet of space within the museum. This new venue is expected to enhance the experience for gala guests, who will be able to easily transition between the exhibition and the dinner at the Temple of Dendur.
Innovative Gallery Design
The galleries, still under construction, will consist of two main rooms with varying ceiling heights—one at 18 feet and the other at 9 feet. Bolton described the layout as offering “permeability,” allowing visitors to navigate freely between the spaces. He views this exhibition as a significant highlight of his career and a declaration of the museum’s capabilities.
Bolton emphasized the unique resources available at the Met, stating, “We have access to 16 curatorial departments across the museum” and a collection of over 33,000 garments. He hopes that “Costume Art” will not only mark the opening of new galleries but also foster an era of collaboration that elevates fashion within the museum context.
The exhibition is scheduled to run from May 10, 2026, to January 10, 2027.
