Mattel Strengthens K-Pop Presence with New ‘Demon Hunters’ Doll Line

Mattel has unveiled a new collection of dolls inspired by the popular Netflix film KPop Demon Hunters, set to launch later this year, following an initial oversight during the film’s release. This new merchandise aims to capitalize on the movie’s overwhelming popularity, which has garnered over 500 million views since its debut in June.

The dolls are scheduled to begin shipping this summer, nearly a year post-release of the film. Roberto Stanichi, Mattel’s Chief Global Brand Officer, expressed confidence in the franchise’s potential for ongoing popularity, emphasizing the company’s commitment to sustaining its relevance in the marketplace.

A Shift Toward Entertainment

In response to declining retail sales, Mattel is strategically repositioning itself from a traditional toy manufacturer to a significant player in the entertainment sector. This transition involves revitalizing its intellectual properties through collaborations with Hollywood. The company has more than 14 films in development, aiming to replicate the success of the 2023 blockbuster Barbie. Among upcoming projects is a live-action adaptation of Masters of the Universe, expected to release in June.

While details remain limited, sources indicate that a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters may be in the works, potentially slated for 2029. Filippo Zuffada, Senior Director of Consumer Products at Netflix, remarked on the significance of merchandise in prolonging the life of intellectual properties, underscoring that details of future plans are currently under wraps.

Collaborations and Development

Mattel’s partnership with Netflix and Hasbro, announced in October, aims to enhance the existing KPop Demon Hunters merchandise lineup, which includes apparel and collectibles. The development cycle for the new doll line typically spans around 18 months; however, Stanichi noted that collaboration with Netflix enabled the acceleration of this timeline while maintaining product fidelity.

Diverse Product Offerings

The dolls, inspired by the film’s protagonists Rumi, Zoey, and Mira, will feature two distinct looks, including dolls that perform the group’s Billboard No. 1 single, “Golden.” Alongside these dolls, additional characters from the film will be integrated into various Mattel brands, including Polly Pocket, UNO, and Little People Collector.

Pricing for the dolls will range between $40 and $45, with smaller items—such as Polly Pocket capsules featuring the girl band’s favorite ramen cups—expected to retail for approximately $8. Some items are scheduled for release in the autumn, broadening the merchandise range available to fans.

Mattel’s efforts reflect a commitment to adapting its strategies within a competitive market, leveraging successful media franchises to engage consumers and stimulate sales.
