Iran Reports Airstrike on Natanz Nuclear Facility as Mideast Conflict Enters Fourth Week and US Reinforces Troop Presence
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — An airstrike targeted Iran’s Natanz nuclear enrichment facility on Saturday, according to an official Iranian news agency. The report indicated that there was no radiation leakage following the attack. This incident coincides with warnings from Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz about an imminent increase in military operations against Iran as the conflict in the Middle East continues into its fourth week.
Katz stated in a video message that the intensity of attacks by Israel and the United States against Iran’s government is expected to “increase significantly” in the coming week. His comments followed an incident where fragments from an Iranian missile struck an empty kindergarten near Tel Aviv, with no casualties reported.
Residents of Tehran reported heavy airstrikes overnight and into the morning. In Iraq, a drone attack on the intelligence service headquarters in Baghdad resulted in the death of an officer, though no group has claimed responsibility for this strike.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he was contemplating “winding down” military operations in the Middle East, despite the deployment of three additional amphibious assault ships and approximately 2,500 Marines to the region. This mixed messaging from the U.S. followed an Iranian threat to target recreational and tourist sites globally.
The fluctuating dynamics in the region have also impacted oil prices, contributing to a significant decline in the U.S. stock market. In response to soaring fuel prices, the Trump administration announced it would lift sanctions on Iranian oil that had already been loaded onto ships.
Iran Strikes a Joint US-UK Base in the Indian Ocean
In a separate incident, the British government condemned what it described as “Iran’s reckless attacks” after missiles were fired at the U.K.-U.S. air base on Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean on Friday. U.K. officials have not disclosed details about the attempted strike, which was reportedly unsuccessful. The base is located approximately 2,500 miles (4,000 kilometers) from Iran.
The U.K. Ministry of Defense stated that Iran’s actions pose a threat to British interests and allies in the region. While Britain has refrained from participating in U.S.-Israeli strikes against Iran, it has permitted American bombers to utilize U.K. bases for operations targeting Iranian missile sites.
Attack on Iran’s Natanz Nuclear Site
Iran’s official news agency Mizan confirmed that there was no radiation leakage following the airstrike on the Natanz nuclear facility, situated nearly 220 kilometers (135 miles) southeast of Tehran. Satellite images indicated damage to several buildings at the site, which is Iran’s primary uranium enrichment facility. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) previously reported that no radiological consequences were expected from an earlier strike during the ongoing conflict.
On Saturday, the IAEA stated that it had been informed by Iran about the Natanz strike and confirmed that there was no increase in off-site radiation levels. The agency is currently investigating the incident.
Trump Says US Near Completion of Its Goals
The U.S. and Israel have provided varying justifications for their military actions, ranging from aspirations to incite an uprising against Iran’s leadership to the goal of dismantling its nuclear and missile programs. Despite these claims, there have been no visible signs of an uprising, and the conflict shows no signs of resolution.
On social media, Trump remarked that the U.S. is “getting very close to meeting our objectives” while considering a reduction in military efforts in the Middle East. This statement appears contradictory to the administration’s recent decision to enhance military presence in the region, including a request for an additional $200 billion from Congress to fund the war.
The U.S. is deploying three more amphibious assault ships and approximately 2,500 additional Marines to the Middle East. This follows the redirection of another group of amphibious assault ships carrying an additional 2,500 Marines from the Pacific. These forces will join over 50,000 U.S. troops already stationed in the region. Trump has indicated that he does not plan to send ground forces into Iran but maintains that all options remain on the table.
Iran Threatens Attacks Beyond the Middle East
Iran’s top military spokesperson, General Abolfazl Shekarchi, issued a warning on Friday that “parks, recreational areas, and tourist destinations” worldwide will not be safe for the country’s adversaries. This statement has raised concerns that Iran may resort to militant attacks outside the Middle East as a means of exerting pressure.
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei praised the resilience of Iranians amid the ongoing conflict in a statement broadcast on Iranian television to commemorate Nowruz. Khamenei has not been seen publicly since he assumed leadership following Israeli strikes that reportedly killed his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Limited information has emerged from Iran regarding the extent of damage to its military, nuclear, or energy facilities due to the ongoing U.S. and Israeli strikes that commenced on February 28. The situation remains fluid, with Iran’s attacks continuing to disrupt oil supplies and significantly impact food and fuel prices beyond the Middle East.
Israel Continues Wave of Strikes Against Hezbollah Militants
The Israeli military announced early Saturday that it has initiated a series of strikes targeting Iran-backed Hezbollah militants in southern Beirut. Witnesses reported smoke rising, fires igniting, and loud explosions throughout central Beirut, shortly after the Israeli army issued evacuation warnings for seven neighborhoods.
Israeli operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon have resulted in over 1,000 fatalities and displaced more than 1 million people, according to the Lebanese government. In Iran, more than 1,300 individuals have died during the ongoing conflict. In Israel, 15 people have been killed by Iranian missiles, with an additional four fatalities reported in the occupied West Bank. At least 13 U.S. military personnel have also lost their lives.
US Pauses Sanctions on Iranian Oil
Brent crude oil, the international benchmark, has surged during the conflict, reaching approximately $106 per barrel, up from around $70 prior to the war. The newly announced U.S. pause in sanctions applies to Iranian oil loaded onto ships as of Friday and is set to expire on April 19.
This measure does not enhance production flow, which is a crucial factor in the rising prices. Iran has historically managed to evade U.S. sanctions, indicating that much of its oil exports continue to reach buyers. The Trump administration has previously paused sanctions on certain Russian oil shipments for 30 days, a move criticized for benefiting Moscow while having a limited impact on global markets.
