Exploring the Dubai Business Associates Programme: A Path to Global Ambassadorship
Not long ago, I had the distinct pleasure of speaking with Mr. Rami Tawfiq, the Director of the Dubai Business Associates (DBA) programme, during a recruitment event at Imperial. Since its inception in 2014, under the auspices of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, DBA has made remarkable strides by recruiting and training 316 exceptional graduates from around the world—preparing them to thrive in Dubai and the wider United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The Vision Behind DBA
According to Mr. Tawfiq, the primary goal of the nine-month DBA programme is to cultivate "global ambassadors." Participants gain a deep understanding of Dubai and the UAE, enriched by cultural exchange and collaboration with a diverse international talent pool. This immersive approach is designed not just for professional development but also for personal growth, allowing individuals to broaden their horizons through meaningful interactions.
A Fully Funded Opportunity
DBA operates on a fully funded basis, accepting 28 graduates annually. Last year’s cohort boasted participants from over 22 nationalities, highlighting the programme’s commitment to diversity. Graduates find themselves engaged in work placements at leading Dubai companies, tackling real-world consulting projects while participating in an array of intercultural activities. A unique aspect is the inclusion of Emirati participants midway through the experience, promoting cultural integration and mutual learning. Previous placements have been with industry giants such as Emirates, dnata, and the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), providing participants invaluable exposure.
A Unique Learning Experience
When discussing what sets DBA apart from other international business programmes, such as an MBA, Mr. Tawfiq emphasized its holistic, practical nature. “It is a practical, immersive, and project-based learning journey,” he noted. This well-rounded approach combines professional and personal endeavors, offering diverse opportunities that extend beyond conventional internships. DBA’s blueprint melds academic study and hands-on experience—a combination that many traditional educational platforms lack.
Career Growth and Options
While DBA does not guarantee job placement after the programme, many graduates find their careers flourishing in Dubai. Mr. Tawfiq pointed out that approximately 75% of participants from the previous cohort opted to stay in Dubai, a testament to the local job market’s vigor. Some graduates venture into top consulting and finance firms like McKinsey and Amazon, while others pursue more unconventional paths—like working for former First Lady Jill Biden or becoming venture capitalists managing tech investments and fostering UAE–China business relations. Participants often share transformative personal experiences, discussing how they stepped outside their comfort zones to pitch ideas and engage with senior stakeholders.
Why Dubai?
For students uncertain about pursuing opportunities in Dubai, Mr. Tawfiq succinctly summarized the city’s allure: “If you want to work in a dynamic, fast-growing multicultural environment, if you want to work alongside a very strong talent pool, if you want unmatched professional and cultural exposure, then Dubai is the place for you.” He emphasized that for those interested in entrepreneurship, Dubai offers a robust business foundation, allowing innovative ideas to flourish within a tax-free economy.
Competitive Application Process
The DBA programme garners immense interest, receiving approximately 6,600 applications for just 28 available spots this year—resulting in an acceptance rate of less than half a percent. The application process is rigorous, beginning with a CV, cover letter, and a brief 90-second video. Candidates who progress through the initial screening undergo two rounds of interviews, where they are evaluated on personality, leadership potential, and relevant skills.
Standing Out as an Applicant
When I inquired about how applicants might distinguish themselves in this competitive landscape, Mr. Tawfiq highlighted the critical importance of preparation and mindset. He advised candidates to conduct thorough research and articulate why they specifically want to be in Dubai. “We are looking for people who focus on what they bring to the programme,” he explained, emphasizing the mutual benefit of the experience. Authenticity is key, especially in the application video: “Show who you really are. Tell a good story,” he encouraged, underscoring the value of genuine narratives in successful applications.
By illuminating the ethos and framework of the DBA programme, Mr. Tawfiq showcases how this initiative not only paves the way for personal and professional development but also strengthens the bridge between cultures in a globalized world. For those embarking on this unique journey, the possibilities in Dubai are as rich and diverse as the city itself.
