Instagram Strengthens Teen Safety with Expanded 13+ Content Ratings in MENA

Instagram has announced the expansion of its age-appropriate content rating system and the introduction of a new setting called Limited Content for users in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). This initiative aims to ensure that teenagers see safe and suitable content by default while using the platform. The changes will automatically place users under 18 into an updated 13+ content setting, requiring parental permission for any opt-out.

This rollout follows the introduction of revamped Teen Accounts and the Limited Content setting in markets including the UK, US, Australia, and Canada in October 2025. The platform aims to create a safer online environment for adolescents, acknowledging that while some suggestive content may still appear, efforts will be made to minimize such occurrences.

Enhancements to Content Policies for Teens

Instagram has refined its content policies to further protect young users from inappropriate material. The updated guidelines are designed to align with the expectations of parents, ensuring that the content visible to teens adheres to safe and age-appropriate standards.

Previously established policies already prohibited sexually suggestive content, graphic images, and adult-related material such as tobacco and alcohol. The new updates extend these restrictions to include posts with strong language, risky stunts, and content that could promote harmful behaviors, such as marijuana paraphernalia.

Advanced Protections for Teen Accounts

To bolster these efforts, Instagram has enhanced its technology to proactively identify and filter out content that violates the updated age-appropriate guidelines. Key improvements include:

  • Account Restrictions: Teens will be unable to follow accounts that consistently share age-inappropriate content or have names or bios suggesting inappropriateness. If they already follow such accounts, they will lose access to their content, direct messages, and comments. Additionally, these accounts will not be recommended to teens, and visibility in search results will be limited.

  • Search Functionality: The platform will block search terms related to sensitive topics, including suicide, self-harm, and eating disorders. The scope of blocked terms will expand to include a wider array of mature subjects, such as alcohol and graphic content, with measures in place to prevent misspellings from bypassing these restrictions.

  • Content Experience: Teens will not encounter content that contravenes the updated guidelines in recommendations, feeds, or stories, even if shared by accounts they follow. Links to such content sent via direct messages will also be inaccessible.

  • Artificial Intelligence Adjustments: Instagram’s AI systems have been updated to ensure that responses generated for teen users align with the new age-appropriate guidelines.

Introduction of Limited Content Setting

Recognizing that families have varying comfort levels regarding content exposure, Instagram has introduced the Limited Content setting. This stricter option allows parents to filter even more content from their teens’ accounts, including the ability to see, leave, or receive comments on posts.

Timeline for Implementation

The updated content settings are currently being rolled out to Teen Accounts in MENA, with full implementation expected in the coming months. This initiative reflects Instagram’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the safety and experience of its younger users.
