The Food That Started It All
Puri Bhaaji has long held a special place in the hearts—and stomachs—of many, as Joshi recounts. This classic dish, along with samosas, Gujarati thalis, and soft, fluffy phulka chapatis, formed the cornerstone of a culinary journey that spans over five decades. While recipes have evolved and variations have emerged throughout these years, the comforting taste of home has remained steadfast. The secret behind this enduring success? Joshi points to an unwavering focus on the customers. “Eat well, and feed well” isn’t just a slogan; it’s a driving force that has helped the brand stand its ground amid changing tastes and trends. This heartfelt approach has fostered loyalty and appreciation amongst diners from the very start.
This culinary haven has attracted not only Indian expatriates but also Pakistani and Nepali patrons who make regular visits, Joshi adds. The restaurant has developed a community feel, nurturing relationships that span generations. Joshi fondly recalls one memorable customer who arrived in Dubai in the 1990s and tried poori bhaaji as his first dish in the city. When he eventually left in the 2000s, that same beloved dish was the last one he enjoyed before departing—a testament to the emotional connection the food creates.
Evolution and Family Legacy
Reflecting on the restaurant’s early days, Joshi paints a picture of humble beginnings. Located near Dubai Museum, the first Bhawna restaurant started with a small team of just six or seven people. Over time, the enterprise flourished, expanding to feature multiple branches—nine in total—across the UAE. Yet, the original restaurant held a unique charm and importance. People would ask, “Where should we meet?” and the answer was invariably “Bhawna restaurant.” It became more than just a place to eat; it was a community hub.
Today, only one Bhawna Restaurant remains, situated on Al Fahidi Street. As the family expanded and their business interests diverged into new ventures like the Uttam brand, some branches inevitably closed. The current location has proudly served patrons for around 32 years. Despite the passage of time, Joshi’s father, at 75, continues to embody dedication and passion, being “the first to wake up and come to work” every day.
