On June 6, a devastating incident unfolded at Jumeirah Beach in Dubai, claiming the life of 29-year-old Issac Paul Olakkengil, an engineer hailing from Kerala, India. The young man was attending an entry-level scuba diving lesson during the festive Eid Al Adha celebrations when he experienced a medical emergency that would ultimately lead to a tragic outcome.

The Diving Incident

Olakkengil was joined by his wife, Reshma, and younger brother, Ivin, for the scuba diving session. Engaged in this adventurous activity, the family was excited to explore the underwater beauty. However, during the lesson at a designated training site, Issac suddenly began to struggle for breath.

His uncle, David Pyarilos, shared with local media that the severity of the situation prompted panic among the trainees. In a moment of chaos, Olakkengil became separated from his group, leading to increased anxiety and confusion underwater. "Everybody panicked and was impacted underwater," Pyarilos recounted. The situation escalated as the attendees grappled with their surroundings.

Rescue Attempts

First responders from the group acted quickly, with Reshma being the first to be rescued and brought ashore. Following her, Ivin, too, was assisted out of the water. Despite their efforts, Olakkengil was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital where, unfortunately, medical staff were unable to resuscitate him. The cause of death was later confirmed as cardiac arrest.

Family’s Ordeal

The emotional toll on the family has been profound. Ivin, who also collapsed during the incident, is said to be recovering but was initially unaware of the full extent of the tragedy. The news of his brother’s death was delivered to him only the following day, compounding the distress during an already devastating time.

David Pyarilos has taken on the responsibility of helping to repatriate Olakkengil’s body to India. "We are heartbroken but must focus on organizing all the necessary arrangements," he stated, underlining the dual burden of grief and logistics.

Investigation Underway

In light of the incident, the Dubai police have initiated an investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the diving lesson. Crucially, all scuba diving equipment utilized during the training session has been seized for analysis. This move aims to determine whether there were any equipment failures or safety protocol violations that contributed to the tragic event.

The continuing investigation seeks to provide answers that may ease the family’s suffering and provide insights into enhancing safety measures for scuba diving in this popular tourist destination.

Community Response

The news of Olakkengil’s untimely passing has resonated deeply within both the local and expatriate communities, particularly amongst those who knew him or had participated in similar activities. Social media platforms have been flooded with condolences and tributes, highlighting the profound loss felt by those who understood the vibrancy and potential of his life.

Issac was not just a family member; he was a friend and a professional with aspirations that have now been dashed. As authorities work to piece together the facts, dialogues surrounding the safety of recreational water sports are being reignited, prompting calls for stricter regulations and more extensive training.

With his vibrant spirit and an adventurous heart, Issac Paul Olakkengil’s legacy will live on in the memories of those who cherished him, as well as in the continued advocacy for safety in adventure sports.
